The world health organisation have said the actual death rate is 3.4% please do keep up Redo. It is higher percentage with more vulnerable people and lower if other groups.

I reckon everyone is going to get this at some point, either soon or next winter.

We appear to be a couple of weeks behind where Italy is and the "containment" phase we're in now looks very much like a "do nothing and keep telling people to wash hands" phase to me. Maybe I'm getting old and cynical?

I'm not sure about buying all the loo rolls, but certainly it can't hurt to be ready for the situation the Italians are in.

Containment doesn't really work if you still admit visitors from other countries. You could lock your country down for 2-3 weeks, have most cases clear up, and then open up again with visitors and returnees from abroad bringing it back. Completely sealing ourselves off from the world would have dire economic and social impacts that could have even worse repercussions than the virus spreading to the government's 80% worst case scenario. I don't envy the medical experts developing the risk impact assessment on this, they are weighing up impossible trade offs. But we can expect unprecedented disruptions to how we go about our lives during the next couple of months.

What's happening in Italy sounds absolutely brutal - reports of triages where doctors decide who they can treat due to a complete shortage of ICU spaces. Mortality rate is apparently comparable to that in Wuhan, though it seems as if Italy was incredibly slow out of the blocks with getting people tested, which does not seem to have been the case here.

Hopefully spring/summer arrives with enough warmth to slow this thing down massively!

Having nearly died on an operating table 15 months ago during lung surgery (brought about through Pneumonia that got infected), I would have taken a dose of Corona Virus any day of the week.

As it sounds like you don't; It is inflammation of the lung tissue, usually caused by infections (viruses or bacteria).

Paracetamol is the stockpilers painkiller of choice. Empty shelves wherever I've looked recently.

A doctor I know told me pneumonia used to be called 'the old man's friend' in the hospital he worked in. It was the bit that finally killed people, relieved them of their struggle - after other illnesses had taken their toll.

I can testify to this - my mother died of pneumonia . . . that took hold after yet another operation on her hip that itself followed many, many years of various health problems.
