I reckon everyone is going to get this at some point, either soon or next winter.Thor wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 5:37 amThe world health organisation have said the actual death rate is 3.4% please do keep up Redo. It is higher percentage with more vulnerable people and lower if other groups.
We appear to be a couple of weeks behind where Italy is and the "containment" phase we're in now looks very much like a "do nothing and keep telling people to wash hands" phase to me. Maybe I'm getting old and cynical?
I'm not sure about buying all the loo rolls, but certainly it can't hurt to be ready for the situation the Italians are in.

Re: Coronavirus
Containment doesn't really work if you still admit visitors from other countries. You could lock your country down for 2-3 weeks, have most cases clear up, and then open up again with visitors and returnees from abroad bringing it back. Completely sealing ourselves off from the world would have dire economic and social impacts that could have even worse repercussions than the virus spreading to the government's 80% worst case scenario. I don't envy the medical experts developing the risk impact assessment on this, they are weighing up impossible trade offs. But we can expect unprecedented disruptions to how we go about our lives during the next couple of months.
What's happening in Italy sounds absolutely brutal - reports of triages where doctors decide who they can treat due to a complete shortage of ICU spaces. Mortality rate is apparently comparable to that in Wuhan, though it seems as if Italy was incredibly slow out of the blocks with getting people tested, which does not seem to have been the case here.
Hopefully spring/summer arrives with enough warmth to slow this thing down massively!

Re: Coronavirus
This constant scaremongering really doesn't help the situation, does it.
Particularly when it relates to unproven, unsubstantiated utter dross such as 'the UK 13.5 days behind Italy'. Seriously?
As I alluded to earlier, Pneumonia KILLS 30,000 UK Citizens per year - that's around 2,500 people each month.
Why isn't that PROVEN figure causing national hysteria?
How many people has Carona Virus killed in the UK so far?
Having nearly died on an operating table 15 months ago during lung surgery (brought about through Pneumonia that got infected), I would have taken a dose of Corona Virus any day of the week.

Seems like they are not doing as much testing as other countries, so their figure probably not reliable https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/05/worl ... virus.html

Its not scaremongering- its reality. Its been explained on here many times why this is so serious.NuneatonO's wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 12:08 pm This constant scaremongering really doesn't help the situation, does it.

You are right to be scared, especially if you have an underlying health condition.

Re: Coronavirus
@ NuneatonO: You do know what causes pneumonia??
As it sounds like you don't; It is inflammation of the lung tissue, usually caused by infections (viruses or bacteria).
The people dying in Italy are being killed by pneumonia - brought on by COVID19

Paracetamol is the stockpilers painkiller of choice. Empty shelves wherever I've looked recently.

Re: Coronavirus
Been out today on a pasta and bog roll hunt and thought I'd check the medicinal aisle whilst there; no paracetamol to be found.
But surely if this is an inflammation of the lung tissue, an anti-inflammatory would be a better bet?

Re: Coronavirus
A doctor I know told me pneumonia used to be called 'the old man's friend' in the hospital he worked in. It was the bit that finally killed people, relieved them of their struggle - after other illnesses had taken their toll.
I can testify to this - my mother died of pneumonia . . . that took hold after yet another operation on her hip that itself followed many, many years of various health problems.

I've found myself singing Frank Sinatra songs for over a week now. You don't think I might have Croonervirus do you? Thankfully I have been stockpiling toilet rolls since 1985 so should get through this

WHO are giving advice on safeguarding mental health during the outbreak
One of the suggestions is
Avoid watching, reading or listening to news that could cause you to feel anxious or distressed
Football results have made me feel like that for over fifty years.
