Liver Detoxes !
For some reason, my social media timelines are full of adverts for various liver detox products. I have questions.
1) Is anyone else here getting these ? Is it the time of year or are they somehow "targetting" me ! (I probably need it but can't think of anything about my search history or other internet usage that might make me a target market for these - Unless my smart speakers / phones are informing on me.)
2) Does anyone here use them - are they any good ?

Re: Liver Detoxes !
First time I've ever heard of a liver detox. Isn't that just like going a day or two without booze?

Your smart phone is definitely, without question, listening out for key phrases which it then will use in targeted adverts. They are targeting you, and it’ll be based on what you’ve searched, what you’ve discussed online, and what you’ve discussed within earshot of your phone.

The liver is the most resilient organ in the body with a serious recovery rate (within reason)
At the end of my drinking days I was informed I had fatty liver (the beginnings of cirrhosis). I didn't take any meds but just cut out booze and drank water.
Within 6 months had it tested and was back to 100% functionality. I was 48, so hardly a youngster and had been hammering the plonk for 20+ years.
I'm not sure you'd need such a product in all honesty..

Re: Liver Detoxes !
Much appreciated input - thank you. I suspected that they're likely snake-oil. I do have fatty liver and have recently been cutting it out for a month or so at a time and trying to keep it to 3 nights a week even when I'm on it (not always successfully it must be said). Suspect I'll take a longer period dry in the New Year.Scuba Diver wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2024 8:23 pmNot sure you'd be spending your money wisely, Spike, unless you're suffering particuarly or have a pre-existing problemStillSpike wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2024 1:47 pm For some reason, my social media timelines are full of adverts for various liver detox products. Re: Liver Detoxes !
1. Detox stuff is all snake oil, your body has various organs to detox for you. If you want to give them a break cut out booze and processed foods for a couple of days.
2. Your phone, google, alexa, etc is not listening to you, it doesn't need to. You get targeted ads based on what you search, interactions with social media, etc, but in general everyone is just far more predictable and susceptible to social programming than they want to accept and that drives a lot of the ads you see.

The algorithm can make mistakes though. For example, I keep being mistakenly bombarded by ads for weight loss, erectile dysfunction, hair dye & Spectator subscriptions.Adz wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2024 9:50 pm 2. Obviously it listens for ok alexa and whatever you say after that for a few seconds, it's not listening to what you say without triggering it thoughLong slender neck wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 7:35 amOf course Alexa is listening. Re: Liver Detoxes !
Very naive to think that that’s not happening. Especially cos every few years there’s a “oh weird turns out our company was listening, can’t understand how that happened but we promise it isn’t happening now” type story.
When a friend of my wife’s visits for the first time in a year, talks about buying a house and suddenly my social media is teeming with adverts about getting my house valued, sponsored posts by estate agents etc - and I mean LOTS, not seeing one post then thinking “that’s weird”, or if I say to my wife “next year I’m gonna try to get good at oil painting, can’t get my head round it” and suddenly my feed is endless “buy this online oil paint course”
It’s simply not true that the highly specific adverts that are in many cases not remotely related to search terms, can happen through anything other than passive listening that triggers when words of interest for targeted advertising are heard

Re: Liver Detoxes !
It really isn’t, and again that’s incredible naivety.
I didn’t scroll past twenty estate agent adverts the day or the week before. The targeted adverts appear immediately, and appear in very high concentration. It’s not in dispute that devices are constantly listening for keywords - they are picking up what we say, and voice activation technology relies on that fact. Your position is reliant on “companies wouldn’t misuse such technology”, despite a hell of a lot of evidence to the contrary

Yes . The liver is very good at repairing itself. People with damaged livers due to alcohol are serious drinkers.

No it's not, it's working in data technology for 20+ years and knowing that it is easy to do it without having to rely on illegal practices.CEB2ElectricBoogaloo wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 9:53 am It really isn’t, and again that’s incredible naivety.

At the end of the day your phone is tracking everything you do, if some other company is doing it through smart appliances does it make much difference?

You’re not telling me anything new. You’re telling me what the companies say. It’s bizarre that you think that such complex cross referencing of location, search terms used by others near you etc have all been used, but the fact that we all carry round a device capable of listening to us constantly isn’t related to the fact that just after talking about something, those devices give you targeted advertising.

“Your phone is tracking you, it’s doing it through complex cross referencing of what the people you’re talking to have searched for and where they’ve been. That’s definitely how it does it, because they say so. It’s definitely not doing it by using the microphone that’s always on, and always listening for keywords. We know this because the companies say so”
