If a deal can be made whereby the Yellows stand down in the North and Reds in certain posho or rural South and West seats then the Blues could be in trouble

Re: Lib Dem Watch
It's certainly the easiest way as Labour haven't won an election unless the leader was called Tony Blair for over 47 years and are coming off their worst result in 85 years thanks to Corbyn.

Re: Lib Dem Watch
Pretty much. But Labour will have to offer the other parties, with the possible exception of the SNP, some concession on electoral reform.

Re: Lib Dem Watch
But if Scotland goes it's own way then Labours chances of an outright victory are diminished even further, so maybe they'd consider it if the current FPTP system was even less likely to work for them going forward.
Even if Labour were dead set against any pacts, it might be worth them having some 'exploratory discussions' about it. The Tories might have to offer some concessions to kill the idea.

Re: Lib Dem Watch
Perhaps. I wouldn't be surprised if there are already behind-the-scenes talks on this. Part of the problem is that there isn't any real appetite for such change across the electorate. And it will always be positioned by the Tories as a coalition of losers trying to rig the rules. It could backfire spectacularly and even see an increase in votes for the Tories.o-no wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 2:16 pmBut if Scotland goes it's own way then Labours chances of an outright victory are diminished even further, so maybe they'd consider it if the current FPTP system was even less likely to work for them going forward.

Labour isn't too keen on PR anyway but, if it was to consider some form of pact, it would have to be very mindful of all of this and try not to spook the voters. They may agree to a deal whereby the Commons remains on FPTP, but have a fully elected upper chamber through PR instead - but with this being implemented over a long timeframe. This could even bring in the likes of Reform UK and some of the other fringe lunatics that occasionally bother the Tories.

I'm not sure, it feels like there isn't a lot for Labour to lose. I'd even suggest a binary Tory/Not Tory choice is ideally suited to your typical voter who regularly displays a disinclination to understand the nuances of policy.
It's lowest common demoninator stuff but I fear that's about where we are.

They could (quite easily) do a non-aggresion pact for the election and then not even talk about electoral reformDunners wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 2:40 pmPerhaps. The subsequent coalition talk, should Labour require coalition partners, would require a form of PR reform though definitely.

He can't even find his socks, let alone pull them up. He says he "takes full responsibility" for the defeat - but he doesn't. He must have said those words, without meaning them, countless times in his life. He's never taken responsibility for anything, ever.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 7:12 pm It's a protest vote , nothing more . Boris has got to pull his socks up and fast . He's already forgotten the warning.
