And why do you think we need food banks now and we didn’t need them in the early 80s under Thatcher with 3.3 million unemployed?
My god. You really are f*cking stupid. How old are you? 50s? 60s?
Is that the only answer you have got?
Answer the question.
No. I'm just not wasting my morning educating someone that is entrenched in their view. Do your own research.

So these Right Wing reactionaries obviously read my previous post about how can you penalise kids, when it is the parents fault? Then then give a load of tosh about : mobile phones, drink, fags drugs etc. Yeah right! But it ain't the kids fault is it? This is precisely Rashford's argument. Give the kids a good square meal at school, you remove the feckless parents from the equation. SIMPLES!!!!! But what about the parents too that having learning difficulties. They have kids, often lots of them. What about their poor kids. You hard hearted sods, go out in the World and look. There is a lot of misery out there. Maybe not on your street, but walk in the poorer areas. Do some fostering, then you can meet and help the products of this misery. Please don't be a denier of the fact that many kids are not in poverty. And, it definitely is not their fault

There were more starving kids?

I wasn't around then, and frankly, I'm not sure why it matters.

If you are cool with kids not being able to eat then it's not me you have to square that with.

No need to get personal, Biggsy. I dont understand why they would turn their backs on other kids if they were on free school meals.

I was also on free school meals, not that it bad, I go the same crap food as everyone else, more a pain of going to get the actually dinner ticket and some people looking down their nose. But I might not have been able to eat because of them, so i'm grateful and hope as many kids that need them can use them. I just dont understand selfishness in our society, never have and never will.

Back in Thatchers day Housing benefit was 100 % paid in full .
Now its about 85% & Council tax only came in at the end of her time.
Rates were far cheaper in comparison than banded
Council/ bedroom tax , therefore the money provided to live
on starts to be used to pay bills before you shop.

In fact im pretty sure if you were on benefits back then you
didnt have to pay rates & if you did.it was a tiny amount
Rather than virtually a quarter as it is today.

Rates & full benefits helped people not going short of food .

I seem to remember 4 or 5 friends at school in 5he 70s
who all got free school meals
Both parents worked & not a bit of alcoholism anywhere .

They were from families with 4 or more Children & that was the
only reason they got free school meals .

Do you pay Council Tax when you are on UC?
Yes .

I paid £250 taken directly from my benefits in monthly instalments
However due to covid , it has been stopped , they will try to charge me
the full £8-900 from 1st april 2020 as i havent provided them the
paperwork to say i am entitled to discount.

However i got the letter on the 28th of March &
The Library was closed on the 23rd March .
( you can only present info at the library &
they email it to the correct dept now).

So we shall see .

That £25.00 or so would help me with food at the end of the month
I can promise you that .

I smoke but havent paid for tobacco in over a year due to the generosity of my
2 sisters just papers & filters which is about £6 a month.

I also used a Food bank for a short period after having to make an
Adjustment from a household income ( My Mum & Me )
of £2600 a month down to £ 251 a month after deductions for benefit .

The food on offer was pretty kack for my tastes so id pick up veg occasionally
if they had it or lots of tinned stuff which sat in the cupboard as it tasted like sh*t.
So stopped using it .
UC is upto £380 now but still short of 25 a month paying off Council tax

People who cannot afford to feed their children should not have children.

There has been in existence contingencies in place post war means to support families in need , the benefit system. What do people do with this money?

At what point does the state stop nursing people ? Some parental responsibility is required at some point. Rashford is being put up by Lefty Remoaning bigots for their own political agenda.
Horrible, and thick. Although your shoehorning in of the EU did make your rubbish take marginally more amusing.
Typical lefty retort, bigoted and without justification. Just like Raynor yesterday in the Commons. Funny how homelessness and child poverty seemingly grew after 1997 when Blair was elected. He of course now has a property portfolio of circa 100 million quid. Opened the floodgates to let in millions into the UK , many economic migrants. There have been and always will be families who cannot budget their money prudently. There are sufficient safeguards in place and a welfare system in place to protect children. Parental responsibility is the key.
What was bigoted about what I said? Again, good you've managed time to find a reason to moan about migrants. Where is the relevance?

So let's say you have a child, you then become disabled. You require care 24/7, plus the extra costs that come from being disabled (simple things like foods, types of foods, needing heating on all day etc) and your benefits do not stretch far enough to cover it all. Then you're bang in trouble.

Should those people have had the foresight to know they'd get ill and therefore should have not had kids?

How can the clowns that voted that down sleep well at night, it’s an absolute disgrace. No one should live in poverty in this country, no child should go without food and especially in this mad world we currently live in help should be extended and more arms wrapped around people that need help and support.

I’m fuming and I’m going to be writing to my mp to complain and ask he makes representation to the minister responsible and even lobby the pm.

Time for action people, hopefully a few more of you will reach out to your mp and show your disgust at this turn of events.

Who is with me?
Depend on what you call poverty.
A bowl of Porridge is 7p and kids get sent to school starving?
You can cook a meal from scratch at little cost.
This by the way is from a life long Labour voter.
Exactly. Perhaps if the parents gave up their mobile phone contracts or stopped smoking, they could afford to give them some buttered toast as well.
They need their mobile phone, or at least a laptop plus internet as they have many expectations to keep up to on UC. Now the DWP expect everything to be done online it means that is a necessity.

Honestly, not everyone is Vicky Pollard. The 'likes' you've put on here, plus your weird input about Rashford shows you're really not educated here.

Tuffers,
Is that right, you have an household income of £2600 PM?
As a Full time carer for my mum we had her pension & disability living allowance of
£1350.00 a month my £550 odd a month from Income support & carers allowance
( carers allowance is now deducted from the disability allowance of the person disabled
whereas it was a seperate state payment before 2015 ) plus about £600 housing benefit .
At the end of 2018 .

My income dropped within 2 months to £251 a month after my mum passed away &
I was no longer her full time carer .

Because you had the ability to put something away for a rainy day. Everyone wants to save. You were in a position to put away at least £16,000. Correct? Not everyone is. But, I still think you should be being looked after better.

Hope you find something soon and good luck to you.

It’s nothing to do with empathy. It’s whether you believe it’s the job of the state to feed people. These are entrenched political views and nothing whatsoever to do with how kind and generous someone is or isn’t.

I have been out of work for 10 months. So yes,I know the price and value of everything.
6 Months dole money at 73.10 pw. Now because I had the sense to put something by for a rainy day I get nothing.
You still haven’t answered the question.
*Ability not sense.

Because you had the ability to put something away for a rainy day. Everyone wants to save. You were in a position to put away at least £16,000. Correct? Not everyone is. But, I still think you should be being looked after better.

Hope you find something soon and good luck to you.
Sense not ability.
I bought a Vauxhall Cavalier in 1999 and used it for work everyday and have still got it. 250 k on the clock.
Paid my mortgage off 10 years ago.
I did these on a average wage and tried not to waste a penny on a load of unnecessary rubbish.
Nope, ability (you can say sense too, but ability is the key).

Average wage and had 10 years mortgage free means you had the ability. You could also afford to buy, and run a car. Even if it was old. You probably did make wise choices, no doubt, and I'm pleased for you.

What does the mother with health issues, one child herself, only able to work minimum wage jobs to fit around the kids schooling do? She doesn't want to claim anything because of the attitudes of certain members of society. She has £20 left a month.

Does she lack sense or ability?

No need to get personal, Biggsy. I dont understand why they would turn their backs on other kids if they were on free school meals.

I was also on free school meals, not that it bad, I go the same crap food as everyone else, more a pain of going to get the actually dinner ticket and some people looking down their nose. But I might not have been able to eat because of them, so i'm grateful and hope as many kids that need them can use them. I just dont understand selfishness in our society, never have and never will.

*If the state needs to or should, as an investment.

I don't think anyone really believes the state should pay if they do not need to, but if they do need to or if there is clear benefit to society (i.e school meals) then that is an investment. So it should be the job of the people, until they cannot, or, unless we see evidence the state should - as well.
