QUICK POLL: SHOULD THE SALE OF FIREWORKS BE BANNED TO THE PUBLIC

Post by ComeOnYouOs »

Fireworks scare the life out of animals.....over the years ive had to watch my various cats and dogs really suffer. They are terrified.
For ages ive said fireworks should only be allowed in organized displays by people who know what they're doing, and no one should be letting them off in streets/gardens
do you agree or disagree?

It’s bizarre that they have not been banned. The vast majority are made abroad so it supports just about zero jobs. Scares animals witless. Every fkning religion seems to let them off some for days on end. Actually, that’s probably it. The government doesn’t want to offend religious groups. Silly me.

I like fireworks at proper organised events, but why people are able to buy them to let off in the back yard is completely beyond me. The one good thing about covid is that it seems to have dampened down demand around here. Many fewer bangs and crashes these last few nights than in previous years.

Legally buying pre packed explosive seems a dubious privilege imho.

One thing Joe Public can't get his head around, is that different things burn at different temperatures. Most of the ingredients of fireworks burn at extremely high temperatures. Magnesium, for example burns at white heat. This can cause very deep burns and very hard to heal. Jst the sort of things you don't want in the hands of pratts.

Not too bothered these days. But had some great family nights together. Gets you out on a cold night, wrapped up warm, bit of hot food, few drinks, some entertainment. Can be a very social occasion in a dreary month.

But kids and now grandkids growing up and less bothered. They prefer organised displays. I don’t bother.

But for some it remains a decent opportunity and reason for a family get-together.

It’s my sons birthday today and every year we have a firework party to celebrate it. It’s the stuff of legend, everyone talks about it as a great social event. Lots of drink, food and masses of fireworks, every year I do my conkers on fireworks. As long as you do it sensibly and behave correctly there is no reason why it shouldn’t be safe and secure for everyone.

This year alas no fireworks and no party! Bloody lockdown!

Do sparklers count as fireworks?.............................Yes they seem innocuous- But sparklers have iron filings and magnesium in their formula and so they burn at a very high temperature. If they touched you whilst burning, you would get a very severe burn.

I took this from Wikipedia worth reading ( especially the bit about temperatures ):-

A 2009 report from the National Council on Fireworks Safety indicated that sparklers are responsible for 16 percent of legal firework-related injuries in the United States.[6] The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's statistics from the Fourth of July festivities in 2003 indicate that sparklers were involved in a majority (57%) of fireworks injuries sustained by children under five years of age.[7]

Subsequent reports from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission about "Fireworks-Related Deaths, Emergency Department-Treated Injuries, and Enforcement Activities" indicate:

Year Estimated Injuries % Estimated Sparklers-Related Injuries
on all Fireworks-Related Injuries % Estimated Sparklers-Related Injuries
for children under 5 years old
2011[8] 1100 17% 36%
2012[9] 600 12% 30%
2013[10] 2300 31% 79%
2014[11] 1400 19% 61%
The devices burn at a high temperature (as hot as 1000°C to 1600°C, or 1800°F to 3000°F), depending on the fuel and oxidizer used, more than sufficient to cause severe skin burns or ignite clothing.[12] Safety experts recommend that adults ensure children who handle sparklers are properly warned, supervised and wearing non-flammable clothing. As with all fireworks, sparklers are also capable of accidentally initiating wildfires. This is especially true in drier areas; in Australia, for instance, sparkler-related bushfire accidents have led to their banning at public outdoor events during summer like Australia Day celebrations.[citation needed]

Ok, so I'm voting no then as I'm fine wiyh sparklers but not so keen on public availability of other sorts of fireworks.

Doggo speak is another - possibly the worst - thing that 2020 has given us. The sooner this year is over the better.

I got badly burned with a sparkler when I was very young, as I picked it up by the wrong end after some older kids had been throwing them in the air.
