Richard McFadden
Company Serjeant Major, Richard McFadden MM, Clapton Orient inside-left and ace goal-scorer - 142 appearances 68 goals. Died of wounds, 23 October 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. Prior to signing-up, he had saved the lives of two young boys from the River Lea and two weeks later a small tot from a house fire on the edge of Clapton Park. Prior to signing for the O's, it was reported he dragged a man from a burning building. McFadden was awarded the Military Medal for 'Bravery In The Field.' It is known that he would often go out into no man's land to rescue wounded colleagues. He was mortally wounded whilst leading a line of troops along a trench near to the village of Serre and died the following day. Rest In Peace, Richard.

What a fine man Richard McFadden was, one of many young lives wasted in that insane war.

Re: Richard McFadden
We will never forget - especially while Steve Jenkins is around and doing his stuff, which I support wholeheartedly.

Re: Richard McFadden
We lost family members in WW1 and 2. Both wars were a tragic waste of life punctuated by acts of extreme bravery and heroism of which R.M. stands out. Never forget the futility and the loss and remember them all fondly. RIP Richard.

Re: Richard McFadden
My great nan lost all four of her brothers to the battle of the Somme. Our family would not have been he only one to have seen a whole generation of men wiped out. So tragic on so many levels.
Steve Jenkins is a credit to this football for what he has done concerning the players and officials who went to war for this country and represented our football club. If you should ever have a chance to go on his tour to the Somme, take it up it’s amazing, emotional and very enlightening.
