Grant Shapps

Post by o-no »

Has to be one the most odious MP's around.

I've been observing his study as he's been appearing on the news every few weeks and it's clear he's making a conscious effort to dress it to convey the impression he is a serious MP, and not in fact an ex get-rich-quick scheme operator who pretended to be someone else and lied about it.

The latest addition to the ministerial box, books facing outward (a la waterstones) and 'Vote Shapps' banners - is a flag featuring the Union Jack.

He's going for that 3rd world president look.

I don't like to be rude about a particular individual, but he's an utter utter utter c-word.

Grant Shapps?

Do you mean Michael Green, Corinne Stockheath or Sebastian Fox?

Oh hang on.........they're all the same person.

Shapps denied having used a pseudonym after entering parliament and, in 2014, threatened legal action against a constituent who had stated on Facebook that he had. In February 2015 he told LBC Radio presenter Shelagh Fogarty, "Let me get this absolutely clear ... I don't have a second job and have never had a second job while being an MP. End of story." However, in March 2015, Shapps admitted to having had a second job whilst being an MP, and practising business under a pseudonym.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... r-while-mp

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... green-post

In his admission, he stated that he had "over-firmly denied" having a second job.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31901533

Under the name Michael Green, Shapps had offered customers a "get-rich-quick scheme" costing $497, and promised customers a "toolkit" that would earn them $20,000 in 20 days, provided they followed its instructions.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/sh ... hael-green

In March 2015, Dean Archer, the constituent previously threatened with legal action by Shapps, threatened Shapps with legal action.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/jamieross/gran ... -his-alter

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... hael-green

In August 2018, the Financial Times reported that it had discovered a "secret pay deal" between Shapps and OpenBrix, a British blockchain property portal company. The story was extensively covered in the UK and online press, and alleged that Shapps would have received a payment in cryptocurrency tokens with a future value of up to £700,000. Shapps resigned from OpenBrix and from his position as chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on blockchain which he had founded. Subsequently, Jo Platt, an opposition politician, called for an enquiry into Shapps' conduct, although Shapps maintained that he had confirmed with the standards commissioner that he was not required to register the interest, and that he had recorded the conversation with the relevant official.

As you quite rightly have alluded to, Schapps is an odious, untrustworthy individual - and possibly one of the most corrupt of the bunch who wear the blue rossette (an achievement in itself).

The usual argument. They're all the same. One party is no worse than the other. Why bother voting, etc etc.

This isn't true. Not all MP's are as bent as Shapps. Some will actually have some ethics and morals. By painting all MP's the same you make it easier for a-holes like Shapps (and he's not alone) to get away with it. Shame on you.

Jenrick is following in his footsteps; but not in the same league at the moment.

Give it time.

100000000% this. I get that being an MP can attract a certain type of person - see also; city types or NHS workers the other way, but it is rubbish to normalise it as just how it is. Just like the way the Tories lie now at the levels they do. It's not normal. They weren't always this bad. Much like I can think of 50 Tory MP's that aren't con jobs, liars and unfiltered scumbags. (inb4 Dohnut arrives to tell me 'Labour don't lie then? that's ok then')

These people only get away with their behaviour because those supposedly in charge enable it. We have chosen to elect a proven liar as our PM. What did you expect his government would be like?

Are you daring to suggest that he does not perceive the welfare issues affecting all his constituents to be his over-riding concern?

Are you daring to suggest that he does not perceive the welfare issues affecting all his constituents to be his over-riding concern?

Let's consider his voting record:

Almost always voted for reducing housing benefit for social tenants deemed to have excess bedrooms

Consistently voted against raising welfare benefits at least in line with prices

Consistently voted against paying higher benefits over longer periods for those unable to work due to illness or disability

Consistently voted for making local councils responsible for helping those in financial need afford their council tax and reducing the amount spent on such support

Almost always voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits

Generally voted against spending public money to create guaranteed jobs for young people who have spent a long time unemployed

Almost always voted against increasing the tax rate applied to income over £150,000

Generally voted against an annual tax on the value of expensive homes (popularly known as a mansion tax)

Almost always voted for more restrictive regulation of trade union activity

Almost always voted for reducing the rate of corporation tax

Voted a mixture of for and against measures to reduce tax avoidance

Consistently voted for university tuition fees

Consistently voted for ending financial support for some 16-19 year olds in training and further education

Almost always voted for reducing central government funding of local government

Voted against greater public control of bus services

Consistently voted against slowing the rise in rail fares

Generally voted against a publicly owned railway system

Generally voted against Labour's anti-terrorism laws

Consistently voted for the privatisation of Royal Mail

Almost always voted for restricting the scope of legal aid

Almost always voted against restrictions on fees charged to tenants by letting agents

Generally voted against laws to promote equality and human rights

As you'll see, a thoroughly nice chap.........a true 'man of the people' and dedicated torchbearer for the 'common good'!

This nasty bit of work resigned around 5 yrs ago, after a young man in the Tory party was bullied and took his own life.
Schapps knew it was going on etc etc. Nasty bit of work, and slipperier than an eel

And a perfect fit for a Boris henchman. Boris has surrounded himself with a cabinet full of opportunists & chancers with Shapps bordering on criminal in many peoples eyes. Boris seems happiest in that kind of company.

OK both you and Bonio have taken my words literally. Maybe i should have rephrased it to:-

He (Schapps) doesn't care and there are a number of MP's across all parties who don't care and are only interested in their self serving needs.

Maybe that would have been better and probably more in line with reality than my previous post.

If only one of the parties had someone totally different in charge, someone not interested in their own personal gain but with a genuine interest in improving the lot of everyone, eh? Imagine that! I'm sure they'd be hugely popular with the entire electorate if, somehow, someone like that managed to land the top job.

It's not fair enough. He's still saying it's an equal issue across all the parties, when it clearly wasn't.
