Re: Wimbledon cancelled
I’m so glad that people are delighted by the fact that numbers of people who support the event and whose livelihoods are boosted by the tournament will see their businesses and staff suffer. Fair enough.

Wow, but why am I not surprised? Are you embarrassed by your country coyos? This is the greatest country on the planet earth, now there is a few countries I’ve not yet been to yet, I’ve seen half of them and this is he best I’ve found so far.
Why are you always so negative against anyhing to do with this great land?

Neither of you can make a fair comparison unless you've actually lived in any of those countries for a long period of time. It's surely obvious that visiting a place isn't the same as living there.Redline wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 6:30 pmI’m with you Thor. Yeah I get that eh16, but I’m get to find anywhere better than here. Yes the beaches maybe better than here, yes the sun may shine longer than here. But when you take everything in to consideration, there’s nowhere better.
Many people say the USA is a great place to live and as someone who stayed in Santa Barbara for 3/4 months a year and yes it’s stunning, America is not better than here. Never in a million years. Some of the Caribbean is stunning beyond belief, Australia is an amazing country, some of the architecture in Italy is out of this world and well Egypt is the most amazing country with a history possibly unrivalled anywhere. But none of them can match good old UK. We have out thoughts and we moan a lot, but we’ve been given an amazing place in which to grow up in and live and experience things that we take for granted that others look on envious at.
It’s the greates country on earth.

Unfortunately there are a lot of football fans that are similar and probably voted to Brexit. The only difference is that lasts 40 weeks!!!!ComeOnYouOs wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 6:05 pm I too am delighted Wimbledon is off this year.

Re: Wimbledon cancelled
As somebody who has queued up and attended the event a few times (including last year), I conclude that it’s actually a grand day out.
Don’t watch tennis any other time of the year but it’s always enjoyable watching athletes who are the best in the world plying their trade.
Last year I ended up spending nearly three hours watching one match between two blokes I’d never heard of. I’m pretty sure they were both ranked lower than 50th or something in the world.
A grounds ticket is something like £20, which considering it’s an international tournament, is seriously good value.
And they let you take in your own food & booze so you don’t have to spend a penny once inside. I was perfect happy scoffing Asda own brand scotch eggs.
And no, I didn’t wave a Union Jack.

Re: Wimbledon cancelled
Its been sh*te ever since they changed the dynamics at wimbledon to
Keep the Clay courters happy & coming.
The French open stood its ground & that is why Nadal has won so many.
Had he or Agassi played wimbledon before the changes , neither would have won
In SW19 . Shows how good Borg was .

Wimbledon played with a harder compound ballSmendrick Feaselberg wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 9:20 pmWhat were these changes out of interest?tuffers#1 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 9:17 pm Its been sh*te ever since they changed the dynamics at wimbledon to

Or a higher volume of air ( cant remember which )
They also changed the surface grass to slow the slower ball down even more.
Serve & Volley was a Huge part of the game.
Not anymore. Im not criticising Nadal , Agassi & others who went on to win it , but grass became a game that wasnt wanted in the pro gane.
3 of the 4 slams used to be played on grass
The U.S Australia & Wimbledon.
The money on offer for exhibition & then indoor tournaments grew so fast the us changed to clay for a couple of years before it was hard court .
Then the Aussie changed as well.
Wimbledon was losing popularuty from players who simoly missed the tournament .
Then i think the year before Agassi won it they changed the balls & surface

Re: Wimbledon cancelled
Interesting. I thought serve and volley died out because modern players could defeat it more easily. Didnt realise it was down to the balls and surface.
Tbf though Nadal is a rare hispanic player to win mens Slams on grass when others couldn't cope with it.

Re: Wimbledon cancelled
I used to slaughter my mates at tennis every summer down the Municipal Courts (six of them. No longer in existence) until Deek Lauder's big brother lent him his Slazenger tennis bat that gave him that extra oomph.
My bat was a municipal one that I nicked, sanded down and repainted to cover the motif "Property of Johnstone Burgh Council" and then went back to play on their courts right under the big nose of Orange Billy, the Council Operative.
He suspected something was amiss but as he was the man we paid to get us to buy carry outs from Presto at the weekend he turned a blind eye to it. Great days.

Re: Wimbledon cancelled
Nadal possibly would have been good enough .
Agassi not a chance .
Look at the finals of becker & Edberg & see how high the services were when they tried to return a ball .
Ut was always shoulder height & they were 8 foot back from the baseline.
If France had changed to a fairer dynamic again ,
Nadal would not have won as many as he did .
Its a shame as now the top 3 Nadal Djokovic & Federer
Have won so many slams & the greatest player to ever play the game won a grand slam in 1962 was then banned for 7 years & won anotber grand slam in 1969 .
Id loved to have seen him play all 3 of them when they were all in there prime.

I still see him about sometimes. He hasn't changed a bit except he only drinks in the "Rangers/Orange Loony Pub" these days.tuffers#1 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 11:10 pmOrange BillyMax B Gold wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 10:39 pm I used to slaughter my mates at tennis every summer down the Municipal Courts (six of them. Which is a shame because his Assistant Council Operative back in the day, Young Paddy, won't go there.
Which is another story.
I bumped into Paddy a few years back who related to me the tale of how his drinking was out of control and nearly killed him.
That was until he bought a bike and cycled the County. I used to pass him in my taxi at least three times a day. He swears the bike saved his life. Then he was hit by a car and was badly injured.
However, last time I met him he was doing a lot of walking with a crutch as part of the recovery. He swears blind the walking saved his life.

Not much. It says he left his hotel at 6.15am and then nothing is known after that. Very sad.

I've always thought the Germans were a lot like us, and like a lot of the same things, but they always seem to be a little bit better at pretty much everything.

There's a lot about this country that's good. Why else would so many people from around the world want to come here? How it compares to similar countries is going to vary from the minutiae to the subjective. But familiarity, especially at a time of crisis, will understandably be a factor.
I've spent quite a bit of time in the south of France the last few years. While I love it over there, right now I'm glad to be back in the UK. So I kind of get what Thor's saying.
As for Wimbledon, I'm not sure I follow the hate for it. I'm not much of a tennis fan, but it it brings people enjoyment what's the problem?
