Dixie Dean
I’ve just read a wonderful article on the late great Dixie and in 1928 he scored 60 league goals a record which still stands today. What is rather omitted when you hear about those exploits is that he actually scored 82 goals that season when cup games were added in, truly phenomenal. I also learned that he did not like the name Dixie either and they explain how he got that nickname. Well worth a read about a goal scoring god.

Re: Dixie Dean
Jimmy McGrory is the all time leading goal scorer
In British Football
408 goals in 408 league apperances
534 in 538 all time games .
Back in the 20s/30s.
Different game back then
Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to come close now.

Re: Dixie Dean
Look at the number of goals scored then compared to now will give a better comparison.

Ah, the good old days when teams played 5 up front and 2 at the back. They had real goal scorers in those days.

Re: Dixie Dean
My step-dad introduced me to football in 1965. I was 17 and my mum was a widow since I was a baby. My step-dad lived in Nottingham and supported Notts County, He was a football fanatic and a Magpies fan until he died aged 83. He didn't just watch Notts County he went to all the best matches in London and was soon dragging me to lots of games. No wonder he was a football connoisseur, watching the likes of Dixie Dean and Tommy Lawton ( he hated Tony Hateley ). Yes we saw Orient beat Chelsea, although that day we were supporting Chelsea . I often wonder if he was alive today, what he would think of the Premier League and the foreign " wonders". His hero was Albert Iremonger, he reckoned he could catch a football with one hand, and if he disagreed with a penalty decision, he would lean against the goalpost & make no attempt to save. Not so many characters these days. It is all about money.

Re: Dixie Dean
Talking of Dixie Dean, I can remember as a small boy the general buzz around Brisbane Road (and I believe the leagues as well) about the possibility that our own Tommy Johnston could break Dean's record. TJ had 32 league goals before the New year in the '57-8 season,so I can see why! Are you all getting that ? (
) :THIRTY TWO league goals by the end of December in the first division - championship!
I think the club should honour him with a proper signage on the South stand like the very impressive one we have for Justin. At the moment we have what appears to be a strip of white hardboard, which you can hardly see..
