SpringHill Bay won't be running ever again - the first horse to die at this year's charming Cheltenham Festival. Around 76 have died at this so-called sporting event since the early noughties.
Simply dreadful.
Don't support this event.
One piece of good news is that attendance numbers are at their lowest for some 20 years plus. Sadly, that doesn't appear to be out of concern for equine welfare but hey a small victory is a small victory.

yes numbers well down. Cheltenham racecourse has got greedy , punters are not idiots. In fact the whole town ie restaurants, hotels have out priced normal fans. The CEO of the racecourse is Guy Lavender who did similar at Lord's cricket ground. He is only in touch with trhe Old Eton farmy crowd. Stuff them all.

I remember having a very pleasant day there in 1986 courtesy of corporate hospitality from a paint supplier who my company was a client off. During the day I found myself having a pee standing next door to Des Lynam - no that wasn't the hi-lite of the day, coming away with a profit of about £50 from my bets was. A very nice day, never been since.

Stud brings £375 million into the economy, supports 8,000 jobs directly & 13,000 indirectly.
On top of that adds £4billion to the government's GVA through horse racing.

You might be able to subsidise the loss of uk wealth, but I certainly can't.

EN, I'm genuinely interested as to how we are able to divorce personal experience of this event from the fact that it kills horses on a regular basis. In the year you went, a horse called Dawn Run fell & broke his neck. The horse racing fraternity no doubt rubbed its hands in anguish for a short while then thought never mind plenty more where he came from.

What I find extraordinary is that people should follow a so called sporting event where its participants regularly die in front of thousands of spectators. I don't believe for a minute that any of us would be following football if this regularly happened on the field of play.

Let’s ban all sport and anything remotely entertaining. People die at football matches either on the pitch or in the crowd . Boxing , Rugby , skiing , motor racing , all high risk sports. Horses do not die regularly at events. Concentrate on animal welfare on farms . You presumably are vegan which I admire. You are doing your bit. But regularly Horse racing , dog racing , fishing all get targeted yet provide millions with an outlet for enjoyment or employment. Dogs are bred and manipulated for human enjoyment. Let’s start by banning unnecessary cross breeding and cruelty with dog ownership
