CORNERS

Post by bobo66 »

I know it's a makeshift defence at the moment, but don't they practice defending corners when training?

How do you combat it if you’re opposing player is five inches taller than you?

If you’re holding them out of your final third you can play for the second ball.

Not so easy on corners even when you know where the ball is going.

We've been lousy at scoring from corners and defending corners for years, IMO and under a load of managers.

And what about throw-ins, apart from the long ones, we never seem to know what to do and very rarely does someone pick up the ball and do a quick throw-in. Oh, if only we had a set-piece coach. Oh, we did have one and we were still lousy at the above.

I have watched the O's for over 55 years and our throw ins have always been like this.
Has always puzzled me why we seem to be so indecisive, glad someone else has noticed it.

I read a book a few years ago, think it was called "The Numbers Game" and it went into the analytics of football. I can't remember the exact figures but quick throws result in retaining possession less than 40% of the time. Also surprisingly short corners create more opportunities to score than the crossed corner (according to the data and statistics used, but I guess that can be manipulated).

It was quite a good book if not a little stattoesque, I might have to dig it out and read it again
