Re: Crazy ideas from The Guardian
Oh, I’ve lost track of how many people whose all-round politics I like have taken enthusiastically to the “no prisons/no borders” thing
Strikes me as totally emblematic of existing in relative safety and never actually encountering the situations or circumstances that result in prison as a proportionate outcome.
Similar to the “defund the police” thing, the search for a slogan and an idealistic goal that’ll alienate outsiders seems designed to reinforce polarisation

She’s talking absolute rubbish in that article, and approaching things from the wrong angle totally.
In fact, I’m willing to bet that the public (who she says want more prisons and have a big appetite for locking people up) actually support a policy of not sending people to prison for non-violent and/or minor crimes.

Mibees aye, mibees naw. I believe that if the public understood the utter futility of prison there would be a large majority in favour of not locking people up. That is not to say there are some who need to be behind bars for the protection of the community.CEB wrote: ↑Fri Dec 02, 2022 10:35 am She’s talking absolute rubbish in that article, and approaching things from the wrong angle totally.

Things like violence reduction initiatives by the police and community also prevent offending and reoffending. However, they are labour intensive highly skilled programmes and therefore expensive.

Yeah, I see what you’re saying - and yes, I am with you in terms of exploring alternatives when we’re looking at rehabilitation or changing circumstances in which people gravitate towards crime.
But the issue (as with defund the police) is that the simple slogans get in the way of thrashing out nuance, and provide easy fodder for the opposition.
Btw: check out the thread where we’ve clashed. The thing that’s just happened is what I’ve been calling for, so I’m interested in your thoughts…

Don’t know what you’re worried about - it turned out that you don’t have any thoughts.

Obvious clickbait article by an "anonymous" author. Next they'll be claiming that films such as Aliens normalises xenophobia and racism.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 7:14 pm https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/j ... be-careful

Re: Crazy ideas from The Guardian
From the figures in that article and the estimated population of the UK at end of 2021, there is 0.00122 of the UK population in prison. I'm all for locking up the bad 'uns and also for topping those who commit certain types of murder, but as I've got older (and hearing from who Mrs NES had a spell of her careers working to rehabilitate women in prison) I've got to see the Norwegian ideas of rehabilitation have huge merit. The worst stat regarding prisons IMO, is that 70%+ of women in prison are for drug-related offences (Mrs NES' figure from her work). We should spend more on rehabilitation, IMO.

Is it OK to speculate about Taylor Swift’s sexuality? Sort of no, but also sort of yes, because of reasons… what reasons? Must dash! Game day!

Using op-eds from writers from abroad whose names have humorous connotations in the UK. (Had to check it's not one of those "Guardian headline generators" thingies)

It's not proof but, as I said, people can draw their own conclusions.

Re: Crazy ideas from The Guardian
Most tv and films have something that will trigger someone. This thing about warnings before programmes is getting silly. My Mrs watches the soaps and most nights there is a warning for people who may be upset by certain scenes.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 7:14 pm https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/j ... be-careful
