where I live: the High Weald countryside on the Kent and Sussex border, is damn beautiful this time of year. If only the country pubs were open for a pint right now it would be perfect.

Went there by train from London for a long weekend leaving our 2 sons in the care of the grandparents for the first time. In the early 1990s.
Lovely B&B that did a wonderful full Scottish breakfast (without the whisky).
There's a salmon ladder in the river and footpaths leading up to the mountain snow line (it was April).
Oh, and I love the weald of Kent which is nearer to home.

I saw Rick Stein do an episode of his tour of France where he went to Collioure. My other half and I today walked down to Rottingdean from Woodingdean, in East Sussex, via Ovingdean for a light lunch of Brocolli and Stilton quiche from the local bakery followed by home made cake, taken sitting on the sea wall. Returned over the downs via Balsdean, don't look for it on a map the British and Canadian armies shelled it to oblivion in 1943/44.
None of this is beauty in a 'postcard' or 'chocolate box' sense it is a Country Park of history that has an awe of its own, where else can you stand within the boundary of a city yet not see a building for miles in all directions.

I'm lucky living adjacent to amazing beaches and walks and a smashing town full of cafes, galleries, pubs etc.
However I much prefer to spend my holidays in cities as I miss concrete. My recent favourite spots are Faro, Rome and Blackburn. Beautiful is more than landscapes, its a moment in time- a coffee and a cake in a small off street cafe, a cheap curry in a dodgy Indian in a grimy Northern city, walking into the Pantheon at 7 etc. Beauty is walking past Percy Ingles on the way to a home defeat to Swindon after a terrible journey with delays.
