Gary Shaw, Villa striker. I remember a story back in the day: he was supposed to pick a Miss Aston Villa from a group of six contestants. They had to cancel the beauty contest because he had relationships with most, if not all of them.

Sad news that Totò Schillaci has died aged just 59. The scorer of six incredible goals during Italia 90.

That's really sad to hear, saw a documentary on him relatively recently and he wasn't even supposed to be in the squad for Italia 90
And what an iconic World Cup that was - great weather, immaculate pitches, first sight of box nets and great stories

That BBC Promo for the ‘90 World Cup, with Nessun Dorma, stays in the mind. Best World Cup in my lifetime for sure.

As long as you don’t include the Final. That stank the place out.

'The Best World Cup' depends on your age. You must be pushing 50 at a guess?

(Based on my theory, I’m predicting 1998, wherever that was).

The 1990 World Cup was the first time that the tournament gripped the nation as a shared televisual event that even non-football fans were engaged in. The day after England's semi-final penalty shootout loss, non-football fans were all talking about it and suddenly full of opinions on the merits (or otherwise) of certain players and Gazza's tears.
It had become a cultural moment. The same almost happened for Mexico 86, especially with the hand of God, but the time difference was still too much of a barrier. Italia 90 built upon the drama of Mexico 86, but hit the winning formula of a banger of a theme tune.

...or so I've read. Obviously, being too young to have experienced both of those tournaments, I'm just going by what I've been told.
