Don't be silly I despise unreconstructed Stalinists.

Besides I've never forgiven him for letting his team send me to canvass the battered wimmins refuge during the 1987 election.

"Congratulations to the great people of #Liverpool to the memory of the socialist miner #BillShankley to the fallen #96 to those who fought for justice for them and to the Liverpool dockers. No #Israël flags on the Cup!"

Again, where is the anti-semitism here? It looks like a (confused) reference to the Spurs fans who take Israeli flags to games.

I don't really want to get into trying to defend him because I agree he's a nasty piece of work but I don't see how this is anti-semitic. Anti-Israel, yes.

It seems those that have weaponized anti-semitism are winning now. They have created a tone than anyone who even mentions Israel is called an anti-semite.
The whole thing has become ridiculous

It's not a matter of winning or losing. Context is important here. What Galloway said was stupid. Why mention Israeli flags at all. Spurs aren't an Israeli team.

I think there are obviously cases where legitimate criticism of the Israeli state has been shut down - or it has been attempted to shut it down - by falsely conflating it with anti-Semitism.

This ain't it though. For GG to bring up Israel like this, completely out of context and with a Club tradionally known for having a large Jewish fanbase, is either anti-Semetic or, if we're being really generous, just woefully thick. Either way he deserved to go (and probably already did for other outbursts).

Except this is aimed at a club with one of the highest number of Jewish fans in England, not an Israeli club. It's not defensible in any way.

Liverpool themselves have had Israeli players over the last 30 years, I wonder how they feel about Galloway's tweet.

Spurs fans always have Israeli flags on display. I guess that’s why he mentioned them?

If he’d said no Jewish hands on the cup or something equally disgusting then yeah, of course he’d have overstepped the mark. But he hasn’t.

I’ve no idea about his knowledge or interest in football but sounds as if he has an issue with the number of Israeli flags displayed at Spurs games.

But he wasn't criticising the State of Israel. He was making a crass remark associating a UK based football team with Israel presumably on the basis that they have many Jewish supporters.

Galloway is a Celtic fan. Would he have been happy if say Rangers or Motherwell beat Celtic in a cup final and somebody said there would be no Irish flags on the Cup. I seriously doubt it and would be rightly speaking out against anti Irish racism.

As GG would say Hail Hail.

Various contributors have made good points, but still it seems there are things that make me feel very uncomfortable.
Free speech is being attacked here. Let me explain...When the so called Novochock attacks happened in Salisbury, it didnt take long for all kinds of people, especially government ministers, to blame Russia. There was little evidence for thinking it was Russia, but that didnt stop the government ( and others) blaming Russia. It was NOT considered an attack on the Russian Orthodox church by anyone at any time, just Russia, the country. but when anyone dares to blame Israel for anything, it is immediately called anti-semitism....an attack on Jews.
Why is one instance not called a religious attack, but on a different country it is?...Double standards or what?
Free speech is slowly being eroded as we lurch into the Orwellian dystopia that we will all find ourselves in, in a few years time. If I slag off Russia, Im slagging off the Russian government, not the main religion, and if i slag off Israel, im slagging of the right-wing government of Israel, not the main religion

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with criticising the murderous actions of the State of Israel whether it's government of the day is Right or Left wing.

But care has to be taken not to unthinkingly criticise Jews for simply being Jewish.

It's definitely an unnecessary and crass remark but you're ignoring the point I keep on making - lots of Israeli flags can be seen at Spurs games, week in week out. That's no doubt because of the amount of Jewish fans the club has (as well as the fact the flag is Spurs colours, which also helps) but that's kind of irrelevant.

I'm not ignoring it. I just think it's a non point. Lots of Irish and Palestinian flags not to mention the flag of the Spanish Republic can be seen at Celtic Park. But nobody would say there will be none of those flags on the Cup if Celtic lost because that would be an unacceptable thing to say about a Scottish club. Now apply that to Spurs.

You do know that Celtic were fined by uefa for there fans waving palestinian Flags don't you..

Yet Israeli flags at Spurs have never bought any kind of fine & must be seen as a political statement as the palestinian ones were by UEFA.

As for the Irish flags at celtic park , they are clearly not political as it is a nod to the fact that the club originally started out as a charitable way to feed starving children most of whom were children of irish immigrants although not exclusively.

What PJ, BM and Maxy said. I can't believe how big a blind spot this is for some.

Imagine it were say Celtic, who fly Palestinian flags at their games, and some right-wing loon tweeted "no Palestinian flags on the cup". You'd be rightfully calling it out for the bigotry it is.

The UEFA rule is just stupid like many of their rules and is a bit of an earner.

Not convinced that the Irish flags displayed by Celtic fans don't have political meaning. The one on the main stand probably performs the function you describe. In the 50s the SFA tried to have it removed.

I'm all up for trying to answer hypothetical questions but Celtic being in the European Cup final is a stretch too far, sorry.
