I just get to wondering why they embarked on these cruises, in the first place, knowing that COV-19 was becoming pandemic.
Sheer stupidity.

A bit unfair - some of these cruises go on for months, especially the long distance round-the-world type ones.

Maybe you haven't read the articles properly; as you clearly haven't grasped the situation.

The many thousands who are stranded aren't passengers - but crew members. They boarded the ships because it was their job. Many are from the Philippines - a Country not exactly known for an abundance of work or decent wages.

Moreover, many of these cruises have been at sea for weeks. In case you hadn't realised, Australasia is on the other side of the World to Europe. Obviously, cruise ships don't exactly travel as fast as aircraft. For example, a particular cruise departs from Tilbury and docks in Auckland, New Zealand, 44 days later (via the Panama Canal route). Take yourself back even to just 44 days ago; if you were on the dock at Tilbury, you would have undoubtedly have boarded; as either a passenger or crew member. Coronavirus was hardly on the radar in the UK back then.

Can you imagine what they; and their families, children, loved ones, etc. are going through right now?

I guess not.

Apparently registered in Bermuda according to the article - unsure why - shouldn't they head back there?

Even if this was the case, it's over 15,000 nautical miles; and even sailing at full pelt (non-stop), would take around 16 days.

Moreover I would imagine that the Health Service provisions across New South Wales/Canberra, etc. are somewhat more in abundance than those available in Bermuda.

The UK used to do a lot of long cruises to Oz in the 18th century and dump their problems on them. Some things just never change.

We were meant to be heading off on a cruise in the 3rd week of June with P&O. I can't imagine that's going to happen though.

P&O wrote to us 2 or 3 weeks back and explained that they were suspending all their cruises up until the 11th April, and all their ships were heading back to home port in Southampton. They've now updated that as said that all departures up to and including 15th May were cancelled - the ships that were on the other side of the world are not home yet but are making their way back. I'm sure in a few weeks we'll be getting another notification that our trip is cancelled too. Seems a small worry, amongst everything else.

Same as us we have one booked on the 27th July fully expecting the same. We would have probably cancelled anyway as 4 out of our party of 10 are in their 70's and wouldn't get insurance.

The plus side is I've already got the 4K tucked away that we still had to pay so will get a nice holiday out of it when all this poo poo is over.

I was supposed to be on the new ship celebrity apex going from Southampton on 23rd April for 10 days. Cancelled it three weeks ago and still not seen a bean.

Can I just add that the Tolpuddle Martyrs came back to the UK.

This was their song:

God is our guide! from field, from wave,
From plough, from anvil, and from loom;
We come, our country's rights to save,
And speak a tyrant faction's doom:
We raise the watch-word liberty;
We will, we will, we will be free!

Englishmen everyone can be proud of.

They can get f*cked, we took one on and it had 200 cases, plus however many they were passed on to. If you are registered in some backwater tax enclave it's time to reap what you sow.

So the responsibility for dealing with sick passengers lies with the country in which the actual vessel is registered? Not sure if I was one of those cases I'd fancy taking my chances with whatever passes in Panama for the NHS.
