Probably our best all round performance of the season if you ignore the Sergeant howler and Embleton's decision to go five up top on 75 minutes, decimating a midfield that bossed Crewe all game.

Sergeant - 5 - felt for the kid, needs to be stood down for a few games to get his confidence back
Brophy - 7 - was always a threat down the left with JMD and solid at the back
Happe - 7 - screwed up for the 2nd when we only had two defenders on the pitch but was solid and his distribution was excellent
Ekpiteta - 7 - has got his mojo back and the combination with Happe looks rock solid
Marsh - 7 - aside from struggling in the first 10 minutes when they overloaded on his side was always willing to get forward, would love to see him alongside Cisse in the middle
JMD - 6 - blew a bit hot and cold today
Clay - 6- ran around like a nutter and should have scored early on
Wright - 7 - benefited from the work Cisse was putting in
Cisse - 9 - looked a cut above this level and hopefully he ran out of steam after 70mins rather than picked up an injury. We lost the momentum when he went off
Soteriou - 7 - would have rated him higher but he wasn't as effective in the 2nd half as he was in the 1st. Brings something to the team and deserves to start
Wilkinson - 6 - only okay tonight and he is much better. Needs a few goals

Angol - 6 - little impact in the 25 minutes he played
Harrold - even less impact but very few crosses came in so can't really be blamed

Sargeant's selection sums Ross up for me. Rather than be proactive and make the decision before he turns in a howler, he will now react and drop him on Saturday instead.
That mistake has been coming for the last 3 matches. And let's not forget, the 2nd goal tonight was fairly atrocious keeping also.
The Newport goal on Saturday was as a result of poor keeping and he was extremely fortunate after the monumental f*** up against Northampton.
On several occasions, you could see the defenders refusing to pass back to him as it would seem they have literally no confidence in him whatsoever.
Too late now though. Well done Ross.

Sargeant's howler last night reminded me of the Chris Tait goal in the play off final against Blackpool in Cardiff. Opening minute, keeper slips over presents forward with an open goal. Unfortunately that day, we couldn't take advantage of our massive slice of luck.

Blame Sarge for Saturday? That's typical of the blame culture that gets attached to certain players. Same with last night's second. Just because he's howlered at the start of the game and then gets beat at his near post does not make it "fairly atrocious keeping". With both those goals Happe is at serious fault (loses his man on Saturday and gets opened up royally last night) but hardly a whisper. I'm not getting at Happe here, but we need to be careful to have a balanced approach to these things.

Whilst I agree Vigaro should have come in by now, you can’t Sarge for either of the goal v Newport or the 2nd goal last night. Both those were unchallenged hits from a few yards out.

Totally disagree that we don’t pass back to him either. If anything, we do it too much. Even the slip last night - which was just one of those things, it happens - was because Marsh had needlessly played the ball back to him instead of going forwards.

The bits I don’t agree with:

Brophy not a 7. Was fine defensively but didn’t offer anywhere near as much offensively S he should. Partly due to JMD disappearing at times, I guess.

Happe not to blame for 2nd goal. If you go 1 v 1 with an opponent, sometimes you won’t win the duel, however good you are. He had absolutely no support or cover, the bloke beats him and has a free run at goal. Compare that to every time we got a player in those positions, Crewe doubled up on us constantly. As you should do.

Marsh was out of his depth against Kirk who kept targeting him as our weak link.

JMD did more work defensively than I’ve ever seen him do but agreed, not as much quality in their half.

Clay was ok for what he is.

Wright - was he playing?

Wilkinson very disappointing compared to Saturday. He was more central last night, that’s clearly not his best position.

Cisse again excellent, Ruel also making a mockery of not being used for the first half of the season.

Why do people continue to make excuses for Sarge. He is not good enough. It’s the old Orient “ he’s one of us rubbish “.
He needs to go out on loan. We don’t owe him anything and we will not have a stable back line with him in goal. You see poor defensive performance all the time in football when an out of confidence or poor keeper is playing. I dread the ball coming into our box. He will continue to cost us a goal a game and as we seldom score two you can’t see us winning many

From viewing the tv stream we played well and were a match for a team - on their ground - who are in the automatic promotion places.

But we’ve gotta get something out of this Saturday s game

Correct only 4 goals conceded in these 3 recent away defeats, means you, should at least expect a point or 3 from those games combined.

This is the same situation as when Justin took over and dropped grainger I believe it was. It changed our fortunes.

Sam sarg has no confidence which rubs of on the whole team. It’s a simple change to make so Ross needs to step up and make it happen !!

I can only compare with Brill. When Sergeant has been playing we have conceded less goals per match. In his run in the side he has conceded 18 goals in 14 matches. Around average for most clubs. But we have only won twice. You are looking at the wrong end of the field.

A young keeper who is learning his trade, you need to give him some slack.

Why this constant crap about our goalkeeper. Defence isn't the issue in the team, goal scoring is. Sarge slipped. It led to a goal. Other players slipped. Not a mention. Sarge makes some decent saves, everyone of which because of our lack of goals is vital. Constant pressure on him. And, I will always support "one of our own" against a brought in player not contributing.

Last night we were decent. Crewe got very lucky.

We should be looking at the midfield as it's been very poor for a very long time. Cisse has improved it no doubt about it.

The second issue is Lingletons post match interview where he says "crewe have an identity and a way of playing" that to me is the single biggest criticism i can level against the coaching team as we have neither. Maybe the last two a and a half games are going some way to rectifying that? I hope it is, but my confidence in Ross has not improved as he is like a fish out of water at times.

I do think we have one, although it has not been the case that we have seen it very often this season and we have switched formation numerous times.

We are never gonna a be a long ball side, for instance. And we always will look to dominate possession and be patient in the build-up, hoping to work some chances. That seems to be the aim, anyway.

My estimations of Ross have gone up a little since he was employed. He's changed things up, also got some sensible signings in. Getting rid of Webb also might be for the best, if it allows us to recruit a new coach who has some defensive skills (as it seems to me that this is something we are lacking across all the coaches).

Nagging feeling is that we should have backed the boss (Fletcher) last time when there was a bust-up. Had we fired the people disrespecting him then and kept him in, I don't think results would have been any worse, and he was right that several players needed to go.

We've improved for now, but have perpetuated a culture which an outsider might find it hard to fit into. I do think either Ross delivers and he is properly backed in the summer, or if we're still 20th at the end of the season I think it should be a clean sweep across the coaches to prevent another debacle.

Over some decades Crewe have generally done quite well on limited income I assume small gates and not much in transfer fees paid

I didn’t t see the game only reading the comments on here plus his interview which he clearly states those words. If they went long long all game and that’s the way they play for example that is in essence an identity, is it not?
