RW scenario

Post by cockhat »

Possibly.
I don’t want to be here please sack me.
We can’t afford to sack you. Please resign.
I would, but, I need the compensation.
If you find another job we will waive the buyout clause.
IMPASSE !!
What a fun season we’re going to have.😳

A clever idea in theory but I would suggest the club would fall foul to a constructive dismissal claim from RW and unlawful dismissal claim from CW. It would also be very damaging to the club’s reputation.

If we want him gone, it’s going to be expensive.

We should have drawn a line at the end of last season.

Absolutely. The end of season performance when he didn’t manage us in our time of need and then blamed everyone else was the cut off point

Yes probably. But it’s looking like there’s little
choice now

Not as expensive as last season, 18 months left and if I remember rightly one of the board mentioned we wouldn't have to pay up the entire contract. It'd still be a chunk, maybe £250k+ but if we get to a point where the relationship with the squad breaks down like last season it'll have to be done.

Until such point though I think the board will keep the faith in RW turning it around.

I don’t believe for a minute Wellens is trying to get himself sacked. He has nothing at all to gain for deliberately sabotaging the season by virtue of non management.
He’s a decent man I am sure, but he’s lost the plot as well as the dressing room.

I agree. I think another poor season would lower his stock considerably. Just look at someone like Mark Hughes, he was managing City not all that long ago. He was sacked by Carlisle last I heard. He will know he's only going to get an upwardly mobile club after us if he gets us up around the play-offs. The idea that he's happy to tank it here is a nonsense. He's got a very sweet deal here for him and his family.

He hasn't lost the dressing room . I was at the game today and I can assure you all our players were putting in a shift . They are working hard but for some reason things are just not clicking for us at the moment . Our wingers and strikers are fine so if we have a problem its in midfield or defence , I'm not sure which .

Our back line was superb. Big Phil admittedly caught on the ball a couple of times but nothing came of it.

Iddy and Gilbert are two of the best midfielders in this division.

Who does that leave?

I just think that we didn’t look like scoring and would like to see us at least try with a different formation up front.
Give Kabia more support with another striker alongside him. He was isolated yesterday, as was Scarlett when he came on.
Yusuf probably had his poorest game so far but on the plus side Aaron Connolly looked good and gave the Plymouth defence something to think about.

We matched Plymouth for the first half but again failed to defend a corner for that all important opening goal.

Just a thought that’s occurred to me sitting by the pool with a cold beer. Having to pay off a football manager when he’s sacked is one of the many bizarre things about football. In what other job would you paid up for your contract if you had failed to meet the standards or criteria for your job? In fact I’d say there was a case for Wellens to have been dismissed for gross misconduct at the end of last season.

It’s a funny old game, etc etc.

They kept faith last season waiting for a turn in performance, nothing happened, and we stay up thanks to Exeter.
They don’t seem to have learnt anything from that.

By the way have you been to the training ground yet to have a word with RW?

Matt Porter was quoted as saying there's a clause in the managers contract limiting his pay off as 1 years salary. I couldn't say for certain that's in Wellens contract but it would not surprise me.
As you point out, if he loses the dressing room again I don't think the club will have any other option but to let him go.

The club has to weigh a few things up.
What would be the most expensive course, sacking Wellens, paying him off, bringing in someone else, hoping that coach could keep us up, or, keeping Wellens, getting relegated, incurring hatred from the fans constantly, & playing in league 2 next season.
Personally, the former would be my choice

Probably about neutral for the relegation scenario when you consider the lower wages in L2, balanced by the reduction in TV revenue and probably attendances.

However the loss of prestige by returning to L2 would harm Gandler's stadium plans so for that reason alone I think he'll act if there's strong indications of a repeat of last season. We're not there yet but if the results don't improve with the half a dozen players that are back / due to be back imminently then it's a different matter

I'm, curious . Realistically speaking who do you think we could get to replace him . Somebody who you honestly think could do a better job . Don't just say anybody , name names .

Whoever comes in would obviously not play WJ1. That will sort 95% of our issues.
