One other point it may be that RW has given a deliberately soundbite filled interview to take heat off the players today and direct the flak his way instead. If that's the plan it's worked, perhaps a tad too well

The problem for me is the tactics, which unless you have a stunning lone striker who scores 20+ a season, it leaves you up the creek. It’s the inability to see it which pisses me off, signing Kabia who doesn’t suit that role in the slightest and again failing to adapt.
Our attacks all start at the halfway line or from our own end, by the time someone has taken it 10 meters up the pitch and look up, there’s nothing there!
Today was a total shambles, not as bizarre as Wellens interview though.

And saying forget about the play offs in game 3 is bizarre.

Agreed. I don’t expect us to win every week but I expect us to be set up properly and the players to be at it.E10quence wrote: Sat Aug 29, 2026 7:48 pm The supporters expect us to win every single week? We haven't won at home in the League since mid-March, Richie.
All we want to see is a team that looks like it can string more than 3-4 passes together and a bit of effort, bit of fight. That's not asking too much.
Yes the injury list isn’t good but he has to get 100% from the players on the pitch. They were nowhere near that. Same system every game good or bad. It’s all so predictable.
We can and should be doing better.

What did he get wrong today?
What else could he have done, personnel, formation or tactics wise, to secure a better performance and result?
That interview was a reminder to fans that we’re 3 league games in, this is a work in progress, we are a young side, the reaction from some of our fans was diagusring today.
I'm not saying Richie out, he should be given time with a new squad. But the fact he's back to deflecting blame having been backed heavily in the summer after throwing almost the entirety of last season's squad under the bus - it's irritating after a game like that. Should have left it at it's a young squad and we're learning.
And my question above remains unanswered. What else could he have done? He was right to keep WellensJnr1 out of the midfield, they’d have murdered him. That team was as good as it gets from the available players.
Dobra was superb on the left against Sheffield Wednesday. Why play him as a ten? If he’s fit put him back there or have him on the bench. That didn’t work at all. I’m not a big fan of Zech but he should have been given the ten role and told in no uncertain terms that he needs to take the shirt or he’s in bother.
That was nowhere near as good as it gets.

So the great tactical change was to put in a player you don’t like (Zech) in a position he doesn’t play (the 10)? Genius.
I would assume the reason he went with Springett wide left over Dobra was to give protection to Morris? Given Morris’ still fragile confidence and the way they attack down the sides, that makes sense.
Dobra wasn’t ready, that was the issue, not the position he was playing.

Re: Richie Interviews after Barnsley 1-3 loss & DV's to RW thanks to Bergen
Massive overreaction from some on here to what is a fairly sensible interview from a justifiably annoyed Wellens.
He is right about our stature in this League. The issue is that while what he is saying about needing to have realistic expectations is perfectly reasonable it contradicts the messaging and behaviour of those in charge of the club. We are being sold a dream of 30,000 seater Thunderdomes and Championship football by owners whose actions don’t align with their stated ambition. It doesn’t help that season ticket holders get slapped with increasingly shorter deadlines to renew each year all under guise of “you don’t want to miss out on next seasons bonanza”, then 3 games into the season the manager is saying on record not to get your hopes up too much.
I don’t think Wellens went too hard on the fans in that interview either. I definitely heard booing at halftime which is utterly mental. If you’re doing that in response to being 1-0 down in Aug against a strong opponent then you can f*ck right off.

Re: Richie Interview after Bansley 1-3 loss
I totally agree. His tactics are a bit worn. He talked with Dave Victor that Blackpool have 7 strikers and we have 2.Whos fault is that.He builds his team with wingers who don’t provide the amount of crosses .When they do there is hardly anybody in the box to attack them .Our forward players have pace but are not robust and easily shaken of the ball.Richie does not seam to like good old fashioned centre forward. For young players it must be difficult to learn how Richie wants them to play. The amount of shots on target we had yesterday proves my doubts that we will struggle this season. RW must take some of the blame .3 weeks ago he was saying that he was exited with the players he has got.Ok prove me wrongessexfootball wrote: Sat Aug 29, 2026 7:29 pm I wanted him sacked last season but new season was behind him, let's see how we do etc but it's just the same old isn't it for me, throwing players under the bus, saying how other teams can sign x or do x, we must've spent a fortune in the summer, it's just done to tactical things though, his subs just seem random and childish at times, taking off the striker to play Theo up top, not marking Cleary out the game etc, Clare was in the bomb squad, then comes on today
I honestly think his biggest positive and negative is almost his self belief, it's great when it is going well but he almost has no self reflection sometimes, it's always someone else or something else, sometimes you have to admit you got it wrong after 20 minutes, half-time, full time, change it, bite the bullet etc

This is my concern - tactically, Richie doesn't seem to have many/any ideas if Plan A (4-2-3-1) or Plan B (go to back 5 + load of random subs at 65/70 mins) isn't working. Seen exactly the same game plan a million times already.moonwalk19 wrote: Sun Aug 30, 2026 8:24 amI totally agree. His tactics are a bit worn. To succeed at upper end of L1 and Championship you either need outrageous individual/squad quality and/or a tactically adept coach. We currently have neither.
I fear Richie is reaching the upper limits of his ability as a coach, tactically, which is why he seems to think the only way we can progress is spunking another £5m on the squad.

Most of us know this is a survival year. There are just too many bigger budgets out there with Sheff Wed, Luton, Leicester and even MK Dons et al.
I think he made a mistake in that interview by not just saying ‘they are a good example of a young hungry team and that’s what we should be’. We can accept that more easily than X club has Y strikers.

Great interview. Clowns booing the team off against Sheffield Wednesday, people think Orient should be winning the league. RW can’t account for individual errors on the pitch.
This is all on the owners. The investment isn’t there. They have poorly managed this squad for years. You can’t sell your best players in the same window as you need to replace 8 or 9 players because they’re out of contract. They want the fans to foot the bill and use their own money as little as possible.
As he said ‘give me another £5m and I’ll get you up there’, he’s not wrong.

Still frustrated with the Ballard thing. It’s good money and it’s tough if the player wants to go. But unlike Galbraith who only had a year left, Ballard had a long contract and we could have said, we’ve got too much turnover, we need you to play 3 months. If you get your head down and score ten goals we’ll get better bids (and teams are more desperate in Jan) and you’ll get better wages. We could have brought in Kabia and eased him in to take over.
That said, I don’t want Orient to be frivolous but if you get 5m for a player why not spend £2m (less than half) on a real statement signing? Or a couple of £1m signings. Rather than reinvesting less than a 5th?
