Re: Orient experiences
When I first went when I was about 6 or something the smell of that burger place at the top of the west stand was the first thing that hit me. Still notice that smell every time I go

Re: Orient experiences
Didn't they used to have people walking among the crowd selling match programmes back then?

Re: Orient experiences
Early 80s?
Ray ‘the rake’ / ‘the roller’, had to replace the north west corner flag during the game. He duly sped across the pitch from the old tunnel in the east stand. But, having replaced the flag, he then proceeded to run back ACROSS the pitch with the broken flag.
The look on the Ref’s face was a picture.

People bringing orange crates to stand on.
Half-time scores where the electronic advertising boards are now.
Referees and police sergeants older than me.
And, if it was the 70's... 0-0 draws

A fella who unmistakably calls out (used to be south stand, but more recently in the north)...'get it in the onion baaaagggggg' with a very distinctive and east-end market trader type magical tone. Long may you continue sir, always make me smile

Re: Orient experiences
May’72, played Birmingham who needed the win to go up to the 1st Division
Nothing on the game for us
If Birmingham failed to win then Millwall got promoted instead, but they did win 0-1
Cue absolute carnage on the terraces as Birmingham, Millwall fans and apparently some ICF from West Ham were fighting each other, and then to top it all there was a bomb scare in the main stand, absolute mayhem.

Seems a strange joyful experience to list but I’m not here to judge. The Reverend wrote: ↑Sat May 10, 2025 7:36 amIsn’t that the same bloke who got arrested for abusing a Colchester United player a few years back?

Night matches and not walking through Coronation Gardens, turning from Buckingham Road into Brisbane Road, seeing the lights and hearing London Calling playing on the tannoy.

Re: Orient experiences
I didn’t say that a bloke getting arrested on suspicion of racially abusing a Colchester United player was a “joyful experience”, I was merely checking if we were thinking about the same person. I believe we are.GibbO wrote: ↑Sat May 10, 2025 8:38 amSeems a strange joyful experience to list but I’m not here to judge. The Reverend wrote: ↑Sat May 10, 2025 7:36 amIsn’t that the same bloke who got arrested for abusing a Colchester United player a few years back?

Re: Orient experiences
Orient vs Chelsea in the Cup in 1972. That match. After Barrie Fairbrother scored our third, the Chelsea fans in the West Side started invading the pitch to try and get the match abandoned. The police were literally picking them up and throwing back over the wall into the West Stand. My dad and I were pinned against the retaining wall. It's the only time in my years of supporting the Os that I've been scared at a match at Brizzie Road.

Raymond the Roller and the smell of burgers, pipe and cigarette smoke in the old West Stand.
