Whatever happens now, accolades to RW & the players

Post by VeganO »

This has been quite the season. Defeat in our first 4 games, struggling for several months, going on our great run which culminated in the excellent performances against Man City & at Wrexham away. We then lose 5 on the bounce & were clearly out of contention or so I for one thought. Then another excellent run which has brought us to this point.
We have showed resilience & a degree of skill.
The team has delighted us on a number of occasions eg Stockport, Barnsley, Exeter& Wrexham away & Wycombe at home. They have infuriated us eg Northampton home & away, Rotherham & Burton away.
I believe we have significantly overachieved to be so close to the play offs. I never believed this would happen. It would be wonderful if we beat Huddersfield, got to Wembley & won. Its been over 40 years since we played in the second tier.
We will all be really disappointed if we get so close but whatever next week & beyond brings, if we make 6th, I am proud of the players & my club.
Some may say we will not be able to compete in the Championship - well I'd love to get there even if we go back down straightaway.

I’ll be gutted but I’ll also be very impressed and proud if we finish 7th.

I’m gob-smacked already.

In November I feared the worst, everything now is a bonus, but I yearn for the day that my beloved Orient walk onto the park for a Championship game.

I've been critical of Wellens at times (though Not the team) for his touchline baboonery and chippy nature, but when the chips are down - and by that I mean when you're hovering around the Top 6 then lose 5 on the bounce; you really do see the mettle of a manager and team.

They could easily have vaguely gone through the motions, picked up a few points, come 10th/11th and I think we'd have all taken that, but of course that has not happened.

Wellens and the whole squad deserve immense credit- win or lose on Saturday. It's been a cracking season of full-on endeavour and no little skill.

I'm in my 56th season - it's been fantastic since October - and what I've found out is that it's more stressful going for possible promotion, than the seasons I've seen the O's successfully avoiding relegation, including those that went down to the last game.

The club deserves huge credit for actually having a productive January transfer window. REG in particular was a great bit of business. All the others bought in have played a part and are miles better than some of the infamous duffers we’ve recruited in recent January windows.

Was a massive improvement in number of players signed and the efficiency of getting them in. Backing Richie kept the season alive as we would've been stuffed without REG at CB during that particularly bad run of injuries at the back

Said it once I will say it again. I am just so happy we didn’t get relegated this season. To me this is an absolute bonus to the season.

Anything is a bonus. Feared the worst when we lost to Exeter at home in October. Thought we would struggle to stay up. Well done to RW & the players plus of course Nigel, Kent, Mark Devlin & the office staff

Some bizarre posts in this thread.

First 3 games were against Bolton, Charlton and Birmingham, we narrowly lost because of a sh*t keeper. 3 draws in those games would have been excellent and well deserved results. The performances were good. Shrewsbury was sh*t, I’ll give you that. We’d be comfortably in the playoffs if it wasn’t for Zach Hemming.

The team lost all momentum several times this season because of international fixtures. October and then the ridiculous gap in November. There was no chance of relegation and everyone who thought so needs to gice their head a wobble.

Finishing 7th a massive achievement for this club and set of players, playoffs even more so.

RW has won the league with this club and a load of these players, a bit more respect needs to be given to him. Most of the criticism this year has been diabolical.

Hemming has proven that he isn't a crap keeper; he's doing well in Scotland. Moving down South and being hundreds of miles away from family, being so young AND having to get used to a new city quickly can affect people mentally. Not sure if people have actually considered this.

Or he’s not good enough for l1 football yet. The SPL is a pretty uneven league in terms of quality.

Have you not seen the gaffes he has continued to make at his new club? (Granted, they're not highlighted because they're considered standard in scotchland).

He cost Orient a lot of points this season, that’s a fact. He’s 25 and had played in Europe and at Celtic Park and Ibrox when he was younger. Orient is 54 miles further away from Middlesbrough than St Mirren is, barely anything.

Is he doing well at St Mirren?

It’s a bit odd that when I pointed out that Howlers was naff I got absolutely slaughtered on here, and yet people seem to have free reign to go in hard on Hemming who happened to be a young GK who had a tricky loan period. It was clear to see that a couple of mistakes completely crippled his confidence and once your head goes you’re more prone to making errors and you fall into a vicious cycle. It was better for everyone that he was moved on but fundamentally I think there’s a professional goalkeeper in there somewhere.

Maybe calling him Howlers didn't help you from being slaughtered on here

Sounds like the sort of thing I'd have come up with, to be fair.
