The oldest player in the Football League

Post by Bergen »

1. Glenn Morris (Gillingham) 41 years
2. Dean Lewington (MK) 40
3. Darren Pratley (Leyton Orient) 40
4. Billy Sharp (Doncaster) 39
5. Richard Wood (Doncaster) 39
6. Stephen Quinn (Mansfield Town) 39

Morris was maybe not our best goalkeeper, but he made his debut for us all the way back in 2002 when Paul Brush was the manager and Martin Ling was still registered as a player (and First team coach). The game against Exeter at Brisbane Road ended 1-1. Team on the day: Glenn Morris, Matt Lockwood, Adam Newton, Dean Smith, David McGhee, Andy Harris, John Martin, Scott Canham, Jabo Ibhere, Danny Hatcher, Donny Barnard. Sub: Matt Joseph.

I think I remember that game. Did Exeter not score near the end of that game to earn the draw?

Canham played for us under someone other than Taylor? My memory is mashed.

Canham was signed by Taylor in 1998, but was released by Brush in 2003.

Who'd have thought Glenn Morris would still be plying his trade in the EFL in 2025, when we let him go.

My Mrs has a Glen Morris goal keeping top that he wore in a win at southend, he signed it and I won it in a charity auction for cancer , well worth the 100 quid I paid and the wife wears it when she occasionally watches the O'S live 👍

Some of my earliest Orient memories are of Glenn Morris endlessly hooking the ball off for a throw in from a goal kick. Astonishing he's still going.

I can't recall Danny Hatcher. I will have to look him up.

Danny Hatcher, coming at ya. Think he came through the youth team, that must have been a very rare start, I'm sure he was usually brought on with 10 minutes to go and put plenty of effort in with very little impact. Adam Newton is a complete blank for me.

Winger that came on loan from West Ham. Only played a handful of games for Orient but went on to play for Peterborough for a good few years.

Hatcher was once heralded by Tommy Taylor to be the next big thing. Like many TT players, he disappeared without trace - bit like K K Opara, Niam Uka, Bjorn Heidenstrom.....

Glenn Morris has signed a new one-year contract at Gillingham and was voted their player of the season by fans. Well done.

Absolutely amazing or even gob-smacking. But good luck to the guy.
