Re: Austerity / Economy
At what point will a political leader be brave enough to admit that the UK is now post-growth economy?

Re: Austerity / Economy
"25 per cent of people say they have a disability that has "substantial" and "long-term" effects on their ability to function in daily life. The rise is sharpest among those of working age, with 24 per cent in this cohort saying they have a disability, up from 19 per cent pre-Covid and 16 per cent a decade ago.
There are now more than ten million people of working age reporting a disability, including a million under 25. This is addition to 1.2 million children under 15 reporting a disability."
That's incredible. That means we've managed to disable more people in the last ten years than what we achieved in both world wars combined.

I'm sure we can look forward to plenty of compassionate, well-informed and nuanced discussion on this headline...

Re: Austerity / Economy
I have a real skepticism about how about mental health is now incorporated into the welfare system. It was incredibly common during COVID for doctors to confirm a diagnosis over the phone with no real consultation and the knock on effect of that is still with us. It's more money for less effort to register as incapable of work due to mental health issues than standard universal credit.Dunners wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 10:08 am "25 per cent of people say they have a disability that has "substantial" and "long-term" effects on their ability to function in daily life. But at the same time, the fact that Reeves welfare cuts total just the right amount to allow her to meet her own fiscal rules feels very dubious.

Re: Austerity / Economy
The definition of 'disabled' has been stretched beyond recognition.
I think of it as unable to walk, blind or properly mental.

Also, if you’re signed off with anxiety you don’t count as unemployed so politicians can say unemployment is down come election time

That graph looks like the proper definition of dropping off an edge of a cliff

Re: Austerity / Economy
Australia introduced the ndis (national disability support). It's gone from 0 to 50 billion in a few years and is a huge rort.Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 10:34 amI have a real skepticism about how about mental health is now incorporated into the welfare system. If only that post made sense the medical experts on here could throw some much needed light on the issue.

Re: Austerity / Economy
Will we get an emergency budget seeing as these numbers are going the wrong way?
Is Trump likely to actually achieve his aims with the tarrifs? To be fair, I dont think anyone likes to see everything made in China/India etc and no manufacturing at home.

Re: Austerity / Economy
Florida has started relaxing the hours that children can work. Somebody in Trump's team has obviously put forward the idea that if Chinese kids can put tech and stuff together with little hands and little pay, why can't American kids. It's all part of the plan.Long slender neck wrote: ↑Mon Apr 07, 2025 10:16 am Will we get an emergency budget seeing as these numbers are going the wrong way?
