Anyone got a garden office?

Post by Long slender neck »

A glorified shed type of thing?

I am thinking about insulating mine and wondered if anybody has done the same? What insulation did you use?

How have you pimped your WFH space?

What do you use yours for?

I’m no expert on the various types, but what nature of insulation are you thinking? Wouldn’t have thought it’d be easy to insulate one.
My wife just uses a heater in there when needed.

Interested in the same. Was built 6 months before we bought it as an art studio and it’s massive. Which is good except it’s too hot to work in July and august and too cold October to March.

Got an electric radiator but it gets lost cos the roof is so high.

It has previously been used as a workshop, so I am going to convert it into an office and gaming space.

I am thinking about insulating the walls and roof with insulation board (not sure what thickness to go for 25mm or 50mm) and putting some sort of flooring down. I am not someone who likes a really warm temperature so dont want to go overboard, also conscious of losing space with thicker insulation.

Highly recommend a modern, one person electric blanket. Cheaper than heating an entire room, and if you’re using the office for leisure/gaming then it’s nice and cosy and if too warm can instantly cool down by taking it off.

If it wasn’t for that my wife likes rooms to be warm, I’d happily just walk around with the electric blanket from November to February

I have a shed office which is insulated and wired up. I used it for 14 years for my business. As kids have gone I have retreated back to the house

The roof and sides are insulated and covered up with plywood. The floor has underlay and a carpet offcut I got for a few quid at the carpet warehouse.

It's heated by an oil filled radiator which does the job and I'm wondering if the insulation makes that much difference. Insulation might work better for you keeping the heat out in summer but you could also resite the shed to a shadey spot (?)

My shed is in shade most of the time protected by a high wall and a Magnolia tree. On the one really hot day of the year we get I either award myself a day off and head for Girvan or use a fan.

We use celotex, works a treat. Remember to do floor as well as walls/ceiling

Cant resite it, too big. Its at the end of the garden and I'm wondering if/how to insulate the following:

One side wall is not external, as the building is split in two, the other section/side is a shed.
The back wall is against a fence and trees, so little heat will be absorbed through it, not sure about heat loss or cold coming in through it. Most heat will be lost through the roof right?

The front faces the sun so that'll be where heat will come in during the summer, its also mostly door and window, so difficult to insulate.

How big is the area you're thinking of insulating?

Just slap a load of Kingspan ACM around the walls. That should keep you nice and toastie in the winter months.

Questions are being asked as to why Man Caves’ are so popular in recent years , some theories that some wives should look at their behaviour these days. Elaborate potting sheds, where many a porn stash ‘Top Shelf’ material, could be found in days gone by.

A decent fan heater should warm up space of this size fairly quickly - depends really on how much time you intend to spend in it but personally I wouldn't bother.

not long done mine as it happens - used this foil/bubble wrap type insulation, apologies but not sure what its actually called and then we just plasterboarded over the top, my office was one of those wooden, corner summerhouses and you could often see gaps in between the joins where air would escape and it would get bloody freezing in winter, since doing it its been much better, have a little oil filled rad that stays on most of the morning and have a little electric heater that I maybe stick on for an hour in the morning just to warm it up, but not too long as the electric bill quickly looks like something resembling Birminghams transfer budget lol
