Yes indeed. The centre of the West Side - under the gantry, in front of the Fat Fryer - was an incredibly educational place for a young boy back in the early 80s.

The first rendition of 'We Love you Owrient, we do' that rings out at kick off - how less cockerney is our fanbase now than a mere 40 years ago?

Sure was. Great memories of fat fryer and the copper who ejected some poor sod for celebrating his horse winning the grand national somewhere around 87-89.Hoover Attack wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 9:31 pm Yes indeed. Re: 40 years ago today
My parents were away that weekend on some work thing so my dad missed it. I had to get dropped off round my Aunts on Watney Market on the Friday, from where my dad's mate came and picked me up. The only bits I remember are missing Cadette's winner as everyone was stood up, and standing on my seat to watch Silkman fluff the penalty.
Yes, Southampton in the next round. Was the biggest fight on the South Terrace I'd ever seen inside a football ground.

I was also in attendance. A great afternoon in a largely dreadful season.Admin wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2025 10:20 pmSure was. Think the Grand National 'incident' was 1989. The lad in question was Pete Petrou aka 'Bread'. A great lad who I'm still friends with to this day.
A less football hooligan-ish alleged football hooligan, you will never meet. The old bill just used to sling people out to justify their existence/overtime a lot of the time I think..

I was there. I'd broken my thigh about 6 weeks earlier and got out of Whipps X just before Christmas, so was on crutches. It was basically my first step outside the house since I'd got home from the hospital. Couldn't get through the turnstile at the north end of the West Side, so they had to open the gate between the turnstiles to let me in.
