Considering adopting Leyton Orient as my team
Alright,
I have moved to E11 in the past couple of months and, as the subject states, I'm now looking for a club to adopt. Geography states that this should be Leyton Orient.
So what do I need to know before I dive in headfirst for a lifetime of abject mediocrity? My knowledge so far amounts to red shirts and a stint in charge on Football Manager, when James Brophy was quite the assist king cutting in from the wing.
* What is the current crop of players like?
* Who are the rising talents to keep an eye on?
* Are we pro the management and owners or do I need to say their names through gnashing teeth?
* Who exactly do we hate - is it West Ham or is that not relevant as we (listen to me, we...) rarely cross paths?
* Who are the legends that I should speak about in misty eyed tones? (RIP Justin Edinburgh)
* Should I refer to them as Orient, Leyton, or Leyton Orient? Or just the Os?
* And when would be a good occasion to make my debut? I was thinking Boxing Day but family committments have now ruined this, so might look at Dec 29th vs Cambridge.
Please don't reply with the usual 'don't bother and save yourself from years of torture' etc etc, I'm a lifelong Hull City fan who has been through it all - crowds under 4 figures, owners locking us out of our own stadium, bottom of the entire league with 1 month of the season to go etc.
Cheers

Re: Considering adopting Leyton Orient as my team
1st rule of Orient Club is Never Call Us Leyton.
Welcome, sounds like you'll fit right in.
Aah, the David Lloyd era of getting locked out of Boothferry. Those were the days. I should unveil myself as the resident Hull aficionado, before I sound too weird.
Derby cup game in January is only a tenner, in case budget plays any part in deciding when your debut is.

You make a (roundabout) valid point that I hadn't even considered - what in sh*tting crikey do I do if Hull are relegated and we stay up?Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 11:01 am Oh yeah? Coming to us when your team is bottom of the Championship and winless in twelve

Indeed, I was there in the lowest ever competitive crowd of under 700 vs Chester in the Autoglass Cup. And I mean actually there, not like the several thousand who claim it.Proposition Joe wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 11:13 am 1st rule of Orient Club is Never Call Us Leyton.

Anyway, let's not derail this to talk about Hull and get back to the topic of supporting Leyton FC.

Don't join this board, the other forum is much better.
We used to have a member from Hull. His user name was Hull O. If I remember rightly, he proposed to his missus on the pitch one half time.

Current crop- the summer window was not a good one. We've got a mixture of crocks and kids on loan. There's a few solid players and stars- Dan Happe, Tom James, Ethan Galbraith, Dan AgyeiBum_Chinned_Crab wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 10:50 am Alright,

Rising talent- Ollie O'Neill, Zech Obiero (out of favour)
Management have overseen an escape from relegation and a league two win. Richie Wellens is a very well liked northener, who doesnt bite his tongue.
Owners rescued the club from the brink, overseen two league wins and a cup final. Very open with fans. This year it seems that they may have hit a ceiling and rising costs have seen purse strings tightened.
Hate- a strong word but recent rivals have been our fellow promotion challengers. Since promotion to league one its whoever Steve Evans is in charge of.
Legends- legendarily bad or good?

Current team is good but shallow and lacks a striker
Pro manager who doesn’t get enough backing from the board but the chairman is a local fan so gets a pass. The Director of Football who has achieved three promotions in various guises comes in for a lot of of slack. The main bank roller pulled his money in the summer
No rivalries really given West Ham, Brentford etc have pulled away. A section of the fan base dislike whoever Steve Evans happens to be managing
Club legends of late Edinburgh, Kevin Lisbie, Scott McGleish and Gianvito Plasmati
Orient or Os
Whenever the next Saturday game you can do. Book in advance, North stand for families, East for old people and people that aren’t season ticket holders, south for chanting and having a pub in the stand, West for average people and watching Mat R***r

I write for a living and the idea of including an apostrophe there turned my stomach, but I'll go with it if purely to integrate.

In which case, I look forward to reading your new blog in the New Year, seeing you welcomed into the clubs inner circle of SuperFans, then disappearing after a season or so.

Prepare for derision and, in order to keep your head up, develop the art of inverted snobbery.
Sadly, people will say, "Oh Leyton Orient. Is Barry Hearn still there?" or "That Dean Cox is good!"

Wellens - good manager - says Orient are "a team with soul."
Oh, and there is not end of moaning on this message board.

Being a writer and following the Os - you will be penning a sitcom before you know it.

O's is correct, for 2 reasons. 1) it's the official version, 2) it's a valid way of pluralising letters, numbers etc. ( e.g. 1980's, she got straight A's in her exams).Bum_Chinned_Crab wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 11:58 amI write for a living and the idea of including an apostrophe there turned my stomach, but I'll go with it if purely to integrate.
It does raise an interesting question though, which might take a PhD in advanced apostrophisation to answer. If a Hull fan were to refer to their stadium as the Tigers' stadium, would we have to say the O's' stadium?

Just because lots of people get it wrong - such as in the examples you use - that doesn't make it acceptable to adopt them.
This is sooner than I intended for a grammar argument, tbh.
