They don't mind governments interfering in football when they own various clubs.

Sounds like uefa have been lent on by some of the big prem clubs to try and spook the government. The lobbying campaign being run by the premier League against the idea of a regulator is well funded and slick.

Exactly this. The opposition to a regulator comes from the oligarch and billionaire owners of Premier League clubs who are lobbying away.
