I’m not a tech head by any stretch of the imagination but is having VPN an advantage these days or just a money maker for us lesser tech heads?
If I was to purchase who/what is the best one to have etc etc
Thanks in advance clever computer people
For most, just a money maker. Apart from streaming football from foreign websites, I have no use for it in the UK. In fact there is a lot of stuff now that won’t work if it detects a VPN. Necessary if you have to/want to keep data transmissions private and confidential.
In honesty I was trying to see if it would help my old dad to be able to watch O’s games as he’s to poorly to attend these days
It would and that’s a good reason to get it. Try before you buy. https://www.howtogeek.com/133680/htg-ex ... -is-a-vpn/ Read this
Word of warning, if your dad is anything like mine you will spend hours on the phone getting it to work.

I share your pain - and recommend Teamviewer when you need to help out less tech savvy relatives
Its definitely not a waste of money. If privacy and security are big deals to you, and quite frankly they should be to everybody then I'd definitely recommend getting one.
I use VPS (Virtual Private Server) for something and I have often wondered whether I could use it for the Leyton Orient matches. now I have found out that I can't because it does not hide my IP address even though the company that supplies it uses another IP address. It is more for software rather than security.

But do your research when buying as some are owned by companies in countries with very dubious data protection laws.

Funnily, I tend only to use mine when using unknown or public wifi for privacy . At home, just laziness, I tend to do without (unless there's a very good reason why I want to be in America, for example). I suppose I should use it all the time, seeing as it's paid for.

Sure, but a VPN for those that use social media extensively is pointless. Ditto webmail. In fact log in on most websites and VPN is made more or less redundant. Unless you want to create numerous aliases on a forum...

I've got VPN for business reasons but it has come in very handy in generating Alaii on various fora. But not this one obviously.

I use one for business purposes as well, but have been "banned" from a number of forums due to the ip address range of the VPN getting quashed because of spammers. I have had to do it on a couple of forums I administer.
Would never think of watching any of our matches using a VPN!! However if I were to recommend one I would suggest downloading the Opera browser which has a build in VPN. Just saying.
