Re: Woke watch.
There was a great bit of fat negativity when Jo Whiley interviewed Blur a couple of months ago. She was talking to Alex James, and he’d said something about cheese, and slimming down to get into his Britpop trousers, and I think someone said something about Alex’s weight loss to Damon, and you could hear the tyrannical band leader in his voice as he had barely disguised disgust and was just like”yeah… well. Don’t let that happen again, eh? No, seriously, what was that about? Don’t let it happen again”

Re: Woke watch.
Yeah, there are legions of social media ‘scolds’ who seem to think moral perfection is a reasonable expectation, and I agree with you that it doesn’t allow for the mess of being human.
I do think someone publicly apologising about having been publicly rude about somebody’s weight is fine, though.
I also think (we might have to agree to disagree here) both of these things are true:
— obesity is associated with loads of serious medical problems and should be treated as a public health issue
— ‘fatphobia’ is a useful shorthand for thinking about/talking about how we sort of collectively bully people with certain body types

Re: Woke watch.
I get why major brands act like this, but I wonder if there would ever be any impact on sales if they just told the kind of people that would make a fuss about something like this to f*ck off.

Re: Woke watch.
Agree tbh. Imagine it'd be cost neutral at worst, most of the social media outrage is usually from people who likely never buy or shop at the affected brand anyway.

Most people would never have noticed until it was pointed out. You can find a tenuous connection with anything if you are looking to be offended.

I don’t understand how one can have a career in advertising and not be aware of when a Christmas ad is going to fall foul of daily Mail readers though
Re: Woke watch.
Wait… I assumed this was just about “you can’t celebrate Christmas any more!” stuff. People think it’s burning the Palestinian flag?

Don't really ever feel sorry for PR types but this is such a lose/lose position for them. If they say nothing, it's apparently a scandal. If they say anything contrite, literally everyone gets upset - the permaoffended aren't satisfied, the gammons are furious at the capitulation to wokeness and everyone else thinks the whole thing is insane.

Re: Woke watch.
Murdered toddler James Bulger's father has lashed out at the 'twisted' parole board hearing after his son's killer Jon Venables was allowed to miss it to protect his mental health.
Venables, now 41, failed to show up at his parole hearing and escaped listening to the victim impact statements being read out - including that of Ralph Bulger, James' father.
This was after he was permitted to have his hearing in private, to avoid the 'disproportionate emotional stress' to the killer.

Re: Woke watch.
Why would Ralph Bulgers impact statement matter to Venbles going back to Jail for chid porn ? Venables being released on licence is when his victim statement should have mattered surely not for why he went back to Jail in 2017 ?Long slender neck wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 12:20 pm Murdered toddler James Bulger's father has lashed out at the 'twisted' parole board hearing after his son's killer Jon Venables was allowed to miss it to protect his mental health.
