Any question allowed preferably non Orient related.

Is it cheaper to leave the immersion on or switch it on and off as required?
The latter, plain common sense
But…the energy it takes to warm up from scratch multiple times may be more than the energy it takes to warm up then stay at a constant temperature

I suppose it also depends on what temperature the water is, how efficient the insulation, whether the thermostat is working and the temperature setting it is at, the material the boiler is made from and whether the electricity being used is renewable generated and free.

My old man was paranoid about the immersion being on at all never mind switching it off or on.

I believe composite is the way to go. A choice of colours and finishes and no rust, but a bit pricey. Obviously a decent shed will have a transitor radio and a flask of tea.

If I'm making a cup of tea, and I'm going to leave it for 10 minutes before drinking it, should I put the milk in now, or wait until I'm going to drink it to put in the milk, assuming I want it to be as hot as possible for when I want to drink it?. In other words, should I cool it down with cold milk now, or later? Does it make a difference?

This opens up a whole painful memory for me.

Many years ago, my brother and family came to stay for a few days. There was a switch on the outside of the immersion cupboard, with a glowing orange light. The immersion was actually controlled through a timer unit (so the switch had to stay on all the time , but the power only flowed to the heater when the timer told it to ( and if you turned off the switch then the timer thing stopped.

My brother took it upon himself to save the planet by turning off the switch when we all went out for the day and then putting it back on when we got in - thereby bolloxing up the timer so we didn't have hot water the next morning. Would other boarders be so presumptuous?

When you say composite, do you mean plastic? I thought plastic shed were derided within the shed community?

I have found that most outdoor plastic stuff just goes brittle and breaks quite quickly. At least wood can be repaired.
