Tuffers , you’re spot on there and though I thought clay was excellent he did just give up when the guy went past him, beaten for pace he just let him go. I don’t think he is 100% fit, but it will come.

Very slow start by us. Strangely, we improved after Brill went off. I’ll credit Embo for that for whatever he said to the players in the break. Really like the look of Angol, good feet and first touch and already has the makings of a good partnership with Wilko.

Everybody was solid or better and I thought Ling had his best ever game for us. Some of the criticism of his forward play is harsh in my opinion and I think it will improve too.

Loving life back in L2 so far. Glad to see the back of those poxy Jako t shirts as well.

The minute‘s silence was slightly spoiled in the East by some poor lad screaming ‘I want to go home’ all the way through. Really felt for him and his parent(s) who must have been mortified.

This thread reinforces my point that people on this forum know nothing about football.

Brill - some good saves, unfortunate to go off. I thought he pulled his arms away and their player kicked him for the pen. Would like to see it again.
Ling - Ok defensively. Nothing more or less. As he was playing as a wing back, his main job was to support the midfield and create for the forwards. He was terrible going forward, even Clay had a go at him at one point. Other than his long throw, no quality.
Ekpiteta - some poor passing at times and got out muscled a lot (especially in the first half)
Coulson - Solid and calm. Unlucky not to score.
Happe - Struggled a bit with the physicality in the first half. Grew into the game and was solid.
Brophy - Had a good game. Good defensively, supported the midfield well and was a threat going forward. Final pass was lacking at times because he was overcrowded in the box. Ling should learn from him.
Clay - Excellent game. Exactly what is needed in that role.
Wright - Sideways and backwards passing. Scared to run forward. Bottled a 70/30 challenge in his favour too. Scored a tap in.
JMD - Was alright, had some dangerous moments and some quiet moments. Needs to improve his decision making but he’s still young.
Angol - MOTM for me. Excellent with the ball, it’s a shame he didn’t have much to aim at when he had the ball out wide.
Wilkinson - Impressed with his work rate and skill set. Much more than the target man other fans said he was.

Sargeant - wasn’t really tested
Alabi - JMD should have played him through. He tried hard but nothing particularly came off. His attempt to hold the ball in the corner was laughable
Dennis - Looked quick with his off the ball movements. Nothing else to go on.

essexfootball wrote: Sat Aug 03, 2019 6:39 pm Brill 8 - Made a good save pre-injury Sargeant - 8 Came for the one cross well, apart from that bizarrely had nothing to do
Ling - Defensively 9 Offensively 3 Loads of blocks, tackles, headers won, going forward other players literally had to point at him to get down the wing, stretch the play and then when he got the either goes backward or fails to cross. He is a CB in a RB's body
Coulson - 7
Epe - 8 - First 20 minutes bit shaky as 10 didn't stop moving and Varney with clever runs, after that utter class, oozes ability and composure, ball playing cb, I don't understand who ever scouted Boone and Koroma didn't pick him up
Happe 8 - Pick much the same as above
Brophy - 7 Pretty solid, couldn't done bit a full times with the final cross but that would be nit-picking, looked far comfortable on the left than the right
Wright 7 - Classy player, upgrade on McNuff, dictates the game, tidy footballer is vital in his role as the pivot, rotating play, be interesting if teams wise up and just mark him, pounced well for the goal
Clay 7 - Very solid, lots of running too
JMD - Always dangerous, probably should've released the ball once or twice earlier, dead ball deliveries good too
Angol 6 - When he gets the ball looks dangerous, just needs the ball to feet more, won the knock-on for the goal, needs to stay on side more and almost get involved/show for the ball more
Wilkinson - Hard to work out how much quality he has, but he doesn't stop battling, jumping, chasing, can't fault him for effort, his shot forced the goal

Not a clue how Alabi keeps coming on over Harold or someone else, I don't get it at all, he looks confused that the football is in between his legs

Aside from the first 20 minutes, Orient solid first half, came out well second, that odd five minutes of the goal and two reds killed the game, thought he would've made subs earlier

I think in reality Angol for Bonne is probably an upgrade, Koroma and wilkinson is hard to measure as very different players, that's the only thing lost that sort of dribbling unknown that Koroma provided where he would shoot from distance a lot of the times awfully but then one of them would be good
That assessment of Ling is spot on. Defensively he was excellent. Some good tackles, blocks and headers.. solid. Offensively he offers very little. If he could improve that aspect of his game he could be very good.

This since Brill made a genuine attempt to get the ball. Surprised that some of our fans don't understand the laws.
Lots of rather pointless rule changes this year, not surprising if people miss some of them.
That rule change didn't come into effect this year though.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances with the loss of Justin, thought it was a great occasion, and great to be back in the league. Thought we maybe should’ve been a bit more dominant when they went down to 9 men, but 3 points is a great way to start the campaign.

Brill 5 - Wasn’t on for long, thought the early challenge was a stone wall penalty.
Ling 6 - Got stuck in (which is a rarity) made some great challenges and headers. Crosses are still lacking.
Coulson 7 - Captains performance. Distributed the ball well from the back and looked solid.
Ekpiteta 6 - Looked uncomfortable on the ball but did a job at the back.
Happe 5 - Thought he was pretty poor in the first half - Cheltenham strikers nearly got through on a couple of occasions when he was ball watching/ not tracking his man.
Brophy 6 - Though he went on a number of decent runs but ultimately ran into trouble. Needs to learn when to run and when to offload the ball.
Wright 8- Dropped deep, collected the ball and distributed well, as well as pulling off some Glenn Hoddle-esque cross field passes. Also chipped in with a great poachers finish for the goal.
Clay 8 MOTM - Ran the midfield and through himself into numerous challenges. Enforced the play and looked our best player.
JMD 4 - Contrary to popular opinion, thought he had a stinker. Lost the ball on numerous occasions and decision making was poor. Also looked half arsed at times and didn’t seem to contest a single header.
Angol 6 - Didn’t come away with any end product today but looked skilful and threatening - and a great finish despite being offside. Looks a class player, who in my opinion will notch 20+ goals this season.
Wilkinson 6 - Didn’t get much service today, but still had a hand in the goal. Hold up play was lacking.

Subs:
Sargent 6 - Didn’t really get tested all game, kicking was a bit dodgy.
Alabi 6 - Exerted himself when he came on, had a shot which flashed across goal, but otherwise quiet.

Agreed about Angol . He looks a very exciting player and could be better for us than Bonne . Josh Wright deserved his goal today and Man of the Match award . I thought he was brilliant today . I'm very happy with that solid start which gives us something to build on for next week.
Agree with this - 100%

JMD was dire, Wright and Clay were excellent. Everyone else was around 6/10 with good moments and bad. Brophy probably best of the rest.

Anyone rating Wright higher than Clay is doing it purely for emotional reasons. He played ok but apart from one attempt Clay ballooned over the bar he was running midfield not Wright.

Clay will score from distance this season. Played well yesterday but his shot was typical Clay. Gotta get one right sooner or later.
