Screen Legends

Did any male actor have greater presence than Humphrey Bogart? Not an illustrious-sounding name when you think of it! One of my other favourites: William Holden esp in Bridge on the River Kwai.

Jack Nicholson, Denzil Washington and Tom Hanks are all living legends IMO. All have "screen presence"

If anyone can bear to sit through a black & white film, I recommend The Philadelphia Story. It stars: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart. It is a highly polished & sophisticated film, with a lot of wit and very adventurous themes for a 1940's film. It was remade a bit late as a colour musical called High Society again with mega stars. But the original is far better. Child star Virginia Weidler plays the kid sister from Hell. Well worth a view for great acting.

Doesn't happen very often, but High Society was one of the rare occasions when you couldn't separate the remake from the original, The Philadelphia Storey. Both very good watches. Another that springs to mind is Cape Fear.

Perhaps the greatest ever performance was Tony Curtis acting as Joe, in Some Like It Hot. He then takes on the role of Shell Oil Junior, he tells Marilyn Monroe that psychological trauma has left him impotent and frigid. Despite Monroe's greatest efforts Curtis claims he is nor aroused. Surely that is a feat of great proportions. Curtis claims that kissing Monroe was like Kissing Hitler-Yeah right!

Yes, he was the obvious stand out, but Holden, a co starring part, and maybe third behind Jack Hawkins, played the lone American prisoner amongst the Brits to perfection. It was great casting.

His performance as the paranoid gold prospector in Treasure of the Sierra Madre was brilliant and another memorable role in the African Queen. Casablanca was a bit rubbish in my opinion, and never understood the film's enduring appeal. Rod Steiger was pretty fabulous too.

Agree re Humphrey Bogart and many other names mentioned. Were lots from that ‘golden’ era who one could quote – I’d throw in James Cagney, Edward G Robinson & Clark Gable too

Only Donovan’s Reef, a light hearted buddy movie with John Wayne and Lee Marvin.
The sort of filler that BBC2 used to show either on Saturday afternoon or during school holidays, but I love it. Not much acting required of Romero or the leads.

How can you say that about Casablanca? The singning of the Marseillaise in the club to drown out the Jerries was sung by actual Frenchmen who had fled France after they had surrendered, again. Rick fought for the Republic in Spain. Sacre Bleu!
