Hybrid Pitch

Post by RedDwarf 1881 »

I'm sorry if this is old news but I've just been on the club's website and discovered we're getting a new hybrid pitch . I knew the club wanted one but didn't realise we'd be getting one this Summer . This is great news to have a lovely new modern pitch but I bet it wasn't cheap .

It probably is cheap from the O's perspective. Guess Spurs are funding most of it.

Spurs have got a grant to pay for most of it.

The groundsman mentioned Spurs after he mentioned the community foundation and the club, so it sounds like a collaberative effort.

It would be interesting to know how many L1 clubs have such a pitch.

The grass around the pitch where the linesmen run up and down always suffers badly, personally I would make that completely artificial.

Artificial grass becomes very slippery when wet. Have you not seen players slip on it where grounds have it around the edge of the pitch?

Anything green (for cosmetic reasons) artificial would be fine, doesn't have to grass like, it's not the pitch itself. I'm sure something non slippery could be found.

Artificial with advertising, pays for itself. Job for the commercial department.

At the end of the day if a hybrid border doesn't turn to mud, then there's not a problem.

I wonder if it’s the same type of Hybrid pitch that Dagenham play on. I hope so because I watched a few end of the season games there and the surface was top notch.

Grass every time for me. It’s a natural product. Will it be like the pitch at Newport? Did not like that.

I wonder what the percentage of natural grass will be kept?

You can get an idea from the model on the Club video. The plastic fibres are sown vertically about an inch apart - the rest of the surface is grass stems (imagine how many grass stems grow in a square inch - it's a lot). So the pitch is nearly all grass, the artificial fibres just stick it all together, really. The fibres stick up above the soil to the depth that the grass will be allowed to grow - I think he said about 3 - 4 cms, and then, as the grass gets to that height, it can be mown just like any other pitch.

Good question.
I would imagine that maybe the plastic fibres and grass mixture make it less likely to freeze in cold weather 🤔
Our old pitch was made playable for the Sutton home game when many games were cancelled due to the snow in December IIRC.

I don’t think these hybrid pitches need any under soil heating. That’s why they are expensive . They are a lot more durable .

Boreham wood had a lovely hybred pitch when we played them when in the Conference.
Their pitch was paid for by Arsenal so their women's team could play there.
