Zeihan's books, the Accidental Superpower and Disunited Nations are really good. He pretty much has predicted the war in Ukraine, and the current issues affecting China.
But he paints a very grim picture of our future.

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
Their bond status will be junk, they'll struggle to find buyers for their bonds which are used to fund Govt spending. They'll probably have to offer unsustainable levels of interest to said buyers which makes funding tricky
Although they're alleged to have vast reserves so it's a mute point

^ What pammy said. It will also mean that, if you hold any Russian bonds in your pensions or investment funds, you can wave goodbye to those.StillSpike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:15 pmWhat does that mean? (in non-city-boy language, if at all possible)

I did say non-city-boy language.
How would I know if I hold any Russian bonds (I bought a stocks and shares ISA the other day, as it goes, but I guess they'd have ditched any Russian investments a while ago, no? )

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
More than 80% of the Bonds are held within Russia which means the exposure of the Western banking system is limited but that won't stop them creating a false panic to make money out the situation.Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:23 pm Their bond status will be junk, they'll struggle to find buyers for their bonds which are used to fund Govt spending. They have defaulted because the payments on the bonds need to be made in US$. I understand the US will not allow that. They have offered to pay in Roubles but nobody wants to accept a worthless currency.

The provider should be able to send you a list of where your money is invested.StillSpike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:42 pm I did say non-city-boy language.

Correct. You'll be fine. And, if you're not, there's f*ck all you can do about it now anyway.StillSpike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:42 pm I did say non-city-boy language.

I had a look on my account and it says there's 0% in "Eastern Europe" and it doesn't mention Russia at all. Phew.
Pammy talks about them offering unsustainable interest to raise money - who in their right mind would lend Russia money now (or would that be aimed at people in Russia - like war bonds?)

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
I would guess the Western financial institutions are prevented from buying Russian Govt Bonds because of sanctions. But that may be a mute point as nobody trusts a defaulter.StillSpike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:57 pmThanksMax B Gold wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:50 pmThe provider should be able to send you a list of where your money is invested.StillSpike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:42 pm I did say non-city-boy language.

80% of the Bonds in issue are already owned in Russia. I'm wondering how the Chinese will support the Russians financially in exchange for cheap energy and commodities to bolster their lagging economy. Dunners will know more about this.

If the interest rate is good enough someone will invest, especially in a Kleptocracy like Russia where the wealthy owe their riches to being allies of the Leader.StillSpike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:57 pmThanksMax B Gold wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:50 pmThe provider should be able to send you a list of where your money is invested.StillSpike wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 5:42 pm I did say non-city-boy language.

It'll just cost them a fortune in interest payments but that's a problem for when they mature in 2-20 years time

FFS, it's going happen at some point, so let's get involved now.
Start with a no fly zone and bring this to some sort of conclusion. The scenario where this is contained is never going to happen.

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
If/when chemical weapons get used Biden is going to have a really hard time arriving on an argument against some form of direct involvement. It's consistently the red line that western countries say cannot be crossed.
If the arming of Ukraine continues to step up, then at some point presumably Ukraine's big numerical advantage comes into play? Might be that Russia then starts to conscript and pours in masses of poorly trained and equipped troops, but then that surely would make the domestic situation in Russia much more perilous for Putin as it'd be an admission that things are going terribly.

Don't panic, Captain Mindsweep. Other than the law which is rarely enforced there's no reason you can't go and fight there if you really wanted to.The Mindsweep wrote: ↑Tue Apr 12, 2022 8:32 am FFS, it's going happen at some point, so let's get involved now.
