Yeah, somethings up. Russian media coverage has suddenly switched up a gear. Ukrainian forces along the front line reporting an increase in shelling and shooting, possibly in an effort to get them to return fire.

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
US Ambassador turned up at Russian Foreign Ministry this afternoon to receive response to security proposal. Was there all of 15 minutes before leaving without saying a word to press. A few minutes later Russia expelled the US Deputy Ambassador and Putin announced he is to issue an address to the Russian Federal Assembly. Ominous.

Can someone advise which side we should be cheering for when the killing starts?

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
Presumably Putin is so secure and dominant at home that the complete lack of justifiable pretext for invading doesn't matter? Still really baffled about how conspicuously awful this looks from Russia. Even a Corbyn type Russia apologist will surely find it a bit sus that there's an "attack" on Donbass that coincides with 6 months of mobilisation by the Russian army.

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
The Russia apologists (or Anything But NATO mob) are still all "Oh, but NATO". At least, that is, when they're not wailing about Starmer being a warmonger or how this conveniently distracts from Johnson's domestic strife.
As for Putin and his lack of giving a f*ck about home sentiment, he demonstrated the same following Georgia. He's also not blinked at any of the Russian casualties of the Ukraine wat since 2014.
But Russia media is definitely turning up the dial on this. There's a lot more coverage of the bullsh*t Ggenocide Putin claims was committed against Russians in Donbass.

You have to admit that there's a certain type who go out of their way to comment and point at everything except the great big elephant in the room. Russia is the aggressor here. There's no ambiguity. They've been offered a bit of a compromise, but they're not interested. They only respond to one thing, and that's everyone standing up to them together.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:03 pmFFS!! All of that is correct but Abbott is actually calling for the avoidance of war by diplomatic means. What is wrong with that ?Dunners wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:18 pmYou have to admit that there's a certain type who go out of their way to comment and point at everything except the great big elephant in the room. Diplomatic means is threatening economic and political sanctions for any aggression which the US and Germany have done by standing together. Putin wasn't expecting such a steadfast response.

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
Anyone interested can read the Russian letter of response to the security proposals on TASS: https://tass.ru/politika/13744013.
You'll need to run it through Google translate, but it's bonkers. As in, Austria-Hungary letter to Serbia level bonkers. No wonder the US Ambassador just turned around walked straight back out. They're not serious about negotiations.

Re: Russia / Ukraine Watch
"Negotiated peace in Ukraine". Just what do you think that means exactly? Could the recent Stop the War poster, showing a map of Ukraine minus Crimea have anything to do with it? The one thing they are all consistent one is a complete absence of condemnation of Russian actions. Funny that.Max B Gold wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:38 pmAll of that is correct but Abbott is actually calling for the avoidance of war by diplomatic means. Everything is like bonkers nonsense when run through Google translate. I'm going to wait for the official CIA/MI5 line. They usually tell you like what it is with no lies and best of all no spin.Dunners wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:39 pm Anyone interested can read the Russian letter of response to the security proposals on TASS: https://tass.ru/politika/13744013.

Putin will negotiate. Just not yet because it doesn't suit. He is ex KGB and a master of deception.

It’s lucky we have the intelligent adults in charge who are willing to do a war.

Well, even I'm anti-war, and I'm a raving fascist by all accounts. But Russia is even demanding that we take back all of the defensive weapons we've given to Ukraine. How do you negotiate with that?
There's a time and a place for sitting on the fence. This ain't it.

How are people still getting triggered at mild criticism of Corbyn over two years later.

It's the straw man school of binary politics that annoys me. I'm not that bothered about criticism of JC. In fact I do it myself quite often.Currywurst and Chips wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 4:11 pm How are people still getting triggered at mild criticism of Corbyn over two years later.

I'm certainly not advocating sitting on the fence. I just not searching the loft yet for the ammo my old boy left me.

Who then would look after Homeland security if they've all gone off to get themselves killed just like they did in Afghanistan and Iraq. This isn't the 70s you know.StillSpike wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 4:20 pm Can't we just send in the SAS and be done with the whole tiresome business?
