I suspect it was because there were too few Motherwell players in the team.

The gents team had the same issue for over 20 years. As soon as they included a few Well players we improved 120% and qualified for ritual humiliation at major tourneys. The one exception being when we smashed Englandshiresville 0-0 at Fortress Wembley.
