Types of Comedy
There are lots of vehicles for comedy. For me the assumption that cross-dressing is funny, leaves me cold. I hate Mrs Brown etc, I just find it embarrassing. Also the use of coarse language to me, doesn't always indicate mirth. In the right context, it can be OK, if not overdone.
If you watch Fawlty Towers, they make use of almost every comedy device. In the Builders Episode, you just know that Basil will call in O'Riley; but they keep you hanging on and when Basil finally rings him after Sybil has gone out-I still find hilarious.
What type of humour do you like? What do you hate?

Re: Types of Comedy
I like the older style stand-up comedy, people like Billy Connolly, Jack Dee and Dave Allen, always guaranteed to make you laugh.
The latter day so-called comedians such us Jo Brand, John Bishop and Michael McIntyre are crap, not for me, thanks.

Re: Types of Comedy
Some stand ups I like (Stewart Lee, Mickey Flanagan), others leave me cold (MacIntyre). Same with sitcoms, comedy dramas, and panel shows. They don’t have to be right on to make me laugh (Bernard Manning’s comedy timing was hilarious, though neanderthal in his views). Funny, that.

Re: Types of Comedy
To me the two types of comedy are funny such as Jim Davidson, Alf Garnett, Bernard Manning etc and unfunny such as all the poncey liberal lefties.

Re: Types of Comedy
Frankie Boyle is the only comedian worth listening to.
William Connolly used to be worth listening to until he went to live in the Royal stables.

Re: Types of Comedy
The smug, self-righteous stuff (a la Kumar, Alex Brooker et al) can do one. It's lazy and uninventive no matter how right-on and the comedian is just leaching off the appreciation of their congregation.
I also find observational comedy that hinges everything on the comedian's identity tiresome. It was a style of comedy that emerged in the 90s and, at first, was punky and confronted stereotypes in a witty way. But that was thirty years ago and the rubbish we're served up today is less talented copycats sh!tting on the legacy of their far more talented predecessors. They just seem to get a pass because nobody dares call them out on it.
I like genuine wit, such as Reginald D Hunter and Lee Mack. I also admire comedy that is able to combine the art of intelligent story telling with real impact, like Dave Allen and Billy Connolly ( in his earlier years).

Re: Types of Comedy
There’s basic comedy, made for basic people and there’s comedy you have to think a little about, which makes it more worthwhile. If you find something funny good on ya, whatever it is, everyone has levels of humour, I guess.
Friends, mrs browns boys, macintryre, Big Bang theory, etc…painful.
Also agree with Dunners. Kumar makes my skin crawl. Amazingly try hard.

Saw Tim Key and David O’Docherty about 2 months ago and both had me rolling in the aisles.

Robert Mortimer is, of course, the funniest person alive today.

Re: Types of Comedy
Jimmy Carr is ok in small bursts as is Ricky Gervais. Ben Elton was funny back in the day. Comedy is not particularly funny anymore anyway as their targets are so limited. Fat people are fine. They don’t suffer from mental health issues and can take it all day every day. Gingers the same. You can make religious jokes about God but leave Mohammed well alone. Aside from them, make a racist joke and anyone under 35 has a breakdown and needs to run to their safe space. Same with anything gender related/sexual preferences.

I’m not convinced the real bera is still here. He gets more and more like a parody of himself with each angry, confused post.Beradogs wrote: ↑Sat Nov 06, 2021 10:16 am Jimmy Carr is ok in small bursts as is Ricky Gervais. Re: Types of Comedy
Some of the best comedy is in mainstream shows and drama. At the moment Succession has a wealth of comedic moments, probably because Jessie Armstrong was the creator and has some great writers linked to the show.

Re: Types of Comedy
The Comedy i dont like doesnt make me Laugh.
The Comedy i do like makes we want to fart while
snot rolls out of my nose & my entire core gets pressured
im usually laughing so hard .
I can Like & Dislike Ricky Gervais in a matter of seconds .
I adore The Boyle Master & The.Legend that is Vegas,
Yet Laurel & Hardy or Danny Kaye & Tommy Cooper are
Just fantastically Slap Stick .
Anything can make me laugh .
I very rarely get offended by Comedy .
I dont see the point , Its Comedy .

Re: Types of Comedy
There is something so cringeworthy in an unfunny “comedian”. Bill Bailey, Kevin Bridges usually get me very much onside.
