Why do that when we can work them to death in labour camps? Once we've nationalised everything first though mind.

We'll also have to build a great big wall to stop people leaving

Then utopia, can't believe this hasn't been tried

It won’t be solved because humans are the last species you would want to solve it. We are way too greedy and self centred. It just ain’t gonna happen. There is something called the Fermi paradox. One of the arguments it makes as to why aliens have never visited despite some planets being millions/billions of years older than our own is that mankind or whatever intelligent life is on other planets can never get past a certain level of intellectual development before destroying themselves. The great filter. Global warming will be our great filter. There is no doubt we are going the way of the dinosaurs in the next few hundred years. Most of the worlds population have not even started to consume in large quantities yet.
But not all humans are like that.
True, but specialists that insure for existential risk have us between 6 and 19% for complete human extinction by the end of this century. That is scarily high.
They are just bookmakers in a different guise, hedging their market position. Besides someone backing extinction....how do they collect their bet??

If these protesters are so vehement in their cause why don't they join all of the main political main parties, get themselves selected as a candidate, spout off their policy and then see how many votes they get. Or will that mean to do that they will lose all their benefits?

Because of our First Past the Post system which is designed to prevent anything that might risk the status quo?

The reason bera has given is just one of many possible ‘solutions’ - it’s more likely that we haven’t seen other life because they’re all being run on a different server.

Its all the same banana, a different system would only support the same or other candidates but would continue to suport the new status quo.

So ...
1.) Our lifestyle is one that within the real foreseeable future will destroy that on which global survival is based on.
2.) Informed and dedicated individuals are trying to make us aware .....
3.) Those who reap mega profit from current arrangements want to continue doing so ...
4.) Those under 3. hold political power ....
5.) Those under 3. and 4. 'tell us what to think'
6.) So 'us' (minions) are encouraged to attack those who really have a 'not for profit' insight of global realities ...
7.) So us minions are told that 'having a traffic blockage' caused by dedicated and informed individuals is outrageous and a crime ...

WHAT THE XXXX?

All political systems, not just the current one, are going to be geared to preserving the interests of whichever 'elite' is in power at any one time. Duh. But the degree to which the current political system in the UK does this is arguably less than all others throughout most of human history.

But, yes, everything is terrible.

1.) Our lifestyle is one that within the real foreseeable future is widely predicted to have an amplification effect on global climate patterns and trends. The further you go into the future the less reliable and accurate any predictions will become. However, nobody is seriously predicting that it will result in humanity being destroyed. Life for many will probably be sh*t, so I'm not trying to play it down. But then life for people living in the worst affected regions was probably always going to get more sh*t. It's just that our current way of life may speed up that process.

2.) "Informed and dedicated individuals are trying to make us aware" :D History is full of the most devout and zealots trying to warn the great thicko masses of the error of their ways. "Why doesn't everybody listen to us/read our sacred texts/think the same way as us?" "Their ongoing indifference to us threatens us - burn them!" It's not an attractive trait and there's always been something off-putting to us normal people about people who are fanatical.

3.) "Those who reap mega profit from current arrangements want to continue doing so". Well, duh! But then the vast majority of people who are currently beneficiaries of the fortunes the current age has brought also want it to continue. And that's for a very good reason. Despite the side-effects, the fossil-fuel age has been one of the main contributors to the greatest period of prosperity in human history. And not just in terms of material wealth. It has enabled great advances in medication and health care, it has resulted in exponential improved crop yields that now supports a human population that would never have been sustainable otherwise. It has aided international cooperation and long-distance supply chains. You have a better standard of life than you could ever have hoped to have had without it. You wouldn't be expressing your opinions on this message board without it. Yes, carrying on as we are will result in many people suffering. But changing our way of life will do that too. Be careful what you wish for.

4.) "Those under 3. hold political power .... " Yes, for better or for worse, that does tend to be one of the functions of a democracy.

5.) "Those under 3. and 4. 'tell us what to think' " Everyone, including those under #2, are telling us what to think. It's like being caught up between the different Christian sects back in the middle-ages.

6.) "So 'us' (minions) are encouraged to attack those who really have a 'not for profit' insight of global realities ..." They don't have any more 'insight' than you or I. What they have is an earnest belief, faith even, that has been established through listening and reading the opinions of others. A bit like people who follow religion. That doesn't mean they're wrong, of course. And if you dig deep enough, the provenance of many of these beliefs is serious scientific study. But let's not elevate people to the status of High-Priest just yet. And if you do have insight into how we can transfer the global world order into a not-for-profit utopia without mass misery and death, then I'm all ears.

7.) "So us minions are told that 'having a traffic blockage' caused by dedicated and informed individuals is outrageous and a crime ..." Grrrrrr!

For what it's worth, I happen to think that Insulate Britain are one of the more credible of the environmental protest groups. Their objectives, whilst not straightforward by any means, can at least be articulated and are sort of achievable given enough political will. Thankfully they've not resorted to stupid tactics such as disrupting tube trains at Canning Town.

Standard approach - don’t like the message, attack the messenger.

This is such an obvious one, it shouldn’t even be up for debate. All homes should be properly insulated.
