Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
Like a lot of things if it was that easy we could all do it.
Marty Wilde made a great comment the other week about songwriting. He said so many people criticise a song and say they could write crap like that in a few minutes. His reply is that if you were put in a cell and only let out once you'd written a hit song you'd probably be in for many years.
Like everything it's not as easy as it may seem.

Blimey, obnoxious comments? He is a poor commentator and his propensity to describe the most awful, soulless performance in almost glowing terms just does my head in.Clive Evans wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 10:21 pm Once again people come on these websites and are plain nasty. Hiding behind aliases. I wonder if they have the bollox to say these sort of things on a face to face basis, or if they used their real names. Can someone explain to me why, on a site for Orient fans to chat about the team, they seemingly love, is there a need to hide behind an alias? This surely encourages people who have probably never done a good deed in their life, to act in a puerile manner. BoniO , please re-read your posting and then if you stand by your obnoxious comments, have the guts to give us all your real name.
Why do that all the time. Anyway, my real name is Ronald Chaudchiens.

Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
I have met Dave a few times, and can confirm he is a genuinely lovely bloke. All the kind things that have been said about him on this thread are true, and I think we are lucky to have him - particularly when you consider what we had to put up with in the National League

Why would you talk about someone this way if you mean no offence? Seems like a decent person to me.
Yeah, he makes gaffes aplenty but it's not like he lacks the self-awareness in this respect, and I rate his commentary as way more entertaining than some of the probably more accurate but really dull stuff I've heard on the radio at a variety of levels.

I also like Dulcet.
I think some of his many 'idiosyncrasies' are quite endearing, and as someone else mentioned if you've ever heard any of some other teams commentaries you'd realise how dull most of those are.
Does anyone else remember the replacement commentator we had for an away game a couple of seasons ago (Peter ?) Now he was really awful.

Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
I have watched just about every game this season and I thought the two blokes doing the commentary were pretty good. Yes, the superstar DJ thing is a little sycophantic but in some way it just added to the fun. Hope to get a chance to watch next season.

Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
I won't miss his commentary if the club does make the call to replace him. A slick, professional streaming service needs to do better than a commentator who doesn't know his own team's players names. Hiscock with an ex-pro alongside for tactical insight would be a good combo.
Never mind all the times the audio breaks down due to DV knocking a cable out, BBC feed issues or the radio going off in the background.

I would hate it if the ‘lads’ that do the pre match and half time stuff in the studio and by the side of the pitch took over the whole thing.
Dave is entertaining.

Dave has served the club for nearly 40 years, I've never heard him say a bad word about anyone other than a certain Italian. Away from the club he heads a special needs school where, judging from some of the replies on here the pupils are infinitely more intelligent than some of you. He is a good man with a good heart. Some of you should try commentating for 90 minutes without making a mistake.
In all truthfulness his job this season has been made so difficult with no crowd and no atmosphere, but he has done his best. He isn't a brown nose, he's an honest guy who has been a friend to me and many others over many years. Perhaps ask what you can do to help the club rather than sledging relentlessly those that do provide a service.
It's the same little clique, most of the people on the board are fine, but it's a nasty little crowd who pipe up each time, same names, give it a rest eh, and leave DV alone, we need more people like Dave and less of the likes of some of you.
Being the father of someone with severe autism and who was a former pupil of one of Daves previous schools I would not assume they are 'thick'. What I've said is that they are clearly more intelligent than some of you. But it probably went over your head. Never mind.
He makes mistakes every game. From getting the opposition team wrong, to players and everything else in between. I’m sure he is a lovely bloke who has served the club well but people pay for a service and he can’t get basic things right.
I was the video commentator for 30 years which included 7 years with ITV West but Elliot in his infinite wisdom borne of a whole 18 months of work experience decided to go with a radio commentary for television broadcast. Hence you end up with birthday wishes and other stuff that is there to fill dead air for the radio listener. TV and radio commentary are totally different and require different skill sets. DV is a decent radio commentator

Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
I prefer to remember I was good enough for a Head Of Sport at ITV to use my services for 7 years and good enough to voice Orients videos from 1988 onwards til 2019. Good enough to be the longest serving club video commentator in the league . Once again the same people making their little digs. Tiresome.

No he didn't. It was he who saddled us with the most confusing website imaginable. Eliot believed his own press coverage and was completely out of his depth. The current guys are generations ahead of him.

Elliott served the club for nearly 3 years, I've never heard him say a bad word about anyone other than a certain Italian. The way he handled one of the most difficult times in the clubs history was exceptional.
It’s no surprise he was headhunted by a Premiership side.

Not sure using special needs kids in some convoluted attempt at having a pop at other people’s intelligence is a good look.Andy Gilson wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 8:40 pm Some of you are seriously nasty pieces of work.

Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
Elliot is a smart guy - alerting the Club to the continued risk of employing someone like Gilson is evidence of that, although I think AG's ropey commentary in the NL years was a big enough factor on its own to merit his dismissal.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Fri May 14, 2021 6:09 amSome of you are seriously nasty pieces of work.

DV may not be the slickest professional either, but he has a huge advantage - he is a genuinely charming, lovely man. Of all the quasi-journalists in the Club's orbit, he's the one with the best skills - he has the knack of being able to ask searching questions in a gentle, unthreatening way and is the only one who is able to occasionally generate some insight.
I don't know the lads who do the punditry on the stream but they seem harmless enough. I know the Club is aiming for a different audience now, but personally I don't feel like they add anything. That Wilkie bloke comes over like a complete chancer though.
If the Club thinks that the streaming service is going to be a goer in the long-run, then they'll need to improve it considerably.
In summary: Team Victor (and Hiscock) all the way.

Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
It's their first season doing it and having watched some other streams from non PL clubs this season, can say that we are miles ahead of most other clubs in terms of coverage. They get genuinely decent interviews with relevant people and nice little features throughout. Given they are only catering for a couple of thousands of people, the quality of the content is very decent.
I'm assuming it's the young guy who 'hosts' who's doing most of this work - if so he deserves a massive amount of credit. Pulling together a season long programme of games on a very limited budget is an amazing achievement. Only thing I'd criticise is the naff looking 'studio' they sometimes use, but as they've gone more pitchside as the season went on, think they've already clued up on that.
As for the commentary, it's a labour of love really. I don't enjoy it but find it very easy to tune out and given how turgid the actual football has been, even the greatest commentator in the world would've struggled to make these games exciting.

Re: Dave Victor's View Of The Season
I listened to Dave’s summary last night. I hadn’t really thought about the long term effects of Covid on the team .I have two work mates who have been off work for months with Long Covid . One has only just returned to work and the other is still off . Do we know how ill our players became. ? If the after effects stayed in their system then yes, that would have quite an impact on our long term performances . Just to add that after listening to Dave’s commentary’s and interviews he strikes me as being a thoroughly good man so I agree with what Andy Gilson said .
