Bonne to Charlton

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Yeah, he's earned a move elsewhere, can't help feeling a little sold short by the fee.
Kind of the equivalent of getting £100k for Marv, and then claiming it's a great deal for the club because we got him for nothing.
I ain't too sure £100k will get us much these days. It would buy someone who is not wanted at another club, or perhaps someone who is unproven at this level. Not that it can't work, Bonne came here because he fell into the first category.

Bollocks.
Good luck to him, I won't be following his progress as i don't like Charlton.

I'm wondering if we already have a striker lined up yet the tragic events over the last 2 weeks have slowed everything down. We would have known about this release clause and the chances of it being met, yet still chose to let Simpson leave without an offer and list Alabi.

200k is an absolute steal. Plus losing 30% if that is true for a bloke who got 49 goals in 2 seasons and never got injured. Laughably poor business Damn release clauses

Re: Bonne to Charlton
You're right that it's lower than desired, but the release fee was the release fee. No point bringing other players into it as we'd evaluate each transfer on it's own merits, not what people might think of a transfer in a vacuum so to speak.eagwgw wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 12:20 pm Yeah, he's earned a move elsewhere, can't help feeling a little sold short by the fee.

Other forwards will have release clauses too or there will be teams that need to cash in, so we could target one of those type of players. The Club have said that they had lists of players in each position to monitor for possible future transfers so will have players in mind. I'm personally up for signing a hungry developing forward who wants to go on to better things and accept that part of this would be that we could lose them in 2 years time too. As fans of a small team it's far too easy to get attached to players so we get upset when they leave after a couple of seasons.

No point in keeping Alabi around, he just isn't good enough for the tier below, let alone this one.Buddy Manucci wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 12:28 pmYeah, I might have gone slightly overboard with brilliant.eagwgw wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 12:20 pm Yeah, he's earned a move elsewhere, can't help feeling a little sold short by the fee.

We will have a list, compiled with input from a number of people, of forwards we want to target. I'd imagine one would be with Bonne, one would be to replace Bonne and probably another to replace Koroma. This will probably have been in the making since February, especially as we would have been aware of the interest in our players. We will be as prepared for this scenario as well as we can.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
I'm not so sure about that . Without Bonne and possibly Koroma we're going to struggle this season. A lot of pressure will be on our new manager to bring in two new strikers virtually as good.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Not sure we can say it's laughably poor business without knowing the context of the release clause being put in there there. Doubt the club would have accepted this without negotiation or trying to exclude it if that was possible. So was it bad business to get him to re-sign and keep a focused Bonne til the end of the 2018/19 season to increase our chance of promotion? I'd say no.Razzmachaz wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 12:30 pm 200k is an absolute steal. Plus losing 30% if that is true for a bloke who got 49 goals in 2 seasons and never got injured. Re: Bonne to Charlton
Do you not think JMD is potentially better then Koroma? He's certainly not as greedy and both are capable of a goal from nothing.
Re: Bonne to Charlton
The thought of Alabi getting on the pitch on League Two slightly scares me.
But yeah, I do think we will have prepared for this already. I remember commenting that Simpson training with the club was a contingency plan in case Bonne was off, and looking at the release clause it was quite likely that something would happen.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I think Simpson could be a good signing now. He suffered because he had to play with Bonne and as a result played a lot deeper than we liked. He got dropped out of the team and then started to look disinterested and didn't really recover from that.
But as the main forward with us playing to his strengths (like we did last time in League Two) I think he's a better finisher than Bonne.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
I'd thought the same about Simpson. It was clear he could only be an alternative to Bonne since they didn't play well as a pair or complement each other's play.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
You need to go and support Man City. Clubs like us always sell players and if you were Bonne would you want the club to hold you back.PoundhillO wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 10:13 amI haven't renewed mine for many reasons, including my lack of faith in the club keeping our prize assets and the lack of quality signings so far.Byways1 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 10:07 amHave you sent yours back yet?
We have always sold our best players for less than what they are worth over the years,
this is no different.
The fact is we don’t have the fan base to compete with the likes of Charlton etc.
Go back to the 1970s and see the problems Brian Winston had in trying to get more than 5000 home fans to turn up. And that was in the Championship.
You don't expand your fan base and attract new fans by selling off your best players and failing to bring in quality additions to the squad it shows a total lack of ambition and it sticks two fingers up to the fans .

I can't see many players wanting to stay to be paid less at a lower level.Good luck to him.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Sadly this is happening on an increasingly regular basis in the lower leagues. We had the same issue when M Taylor left for the sh*t on dead-line day (11pm dead-line day - the c***) for £300k.
A player (likely to play at a higher level) will extend his contract on the basis that he has a 'low' release cause.
So instead of a player leaving mid-contract without a release clause for (say) £1mil... and then earns (say) £10k a week.
The net cost to new Club over 3 years =£2.6mil ish).
But if he inserts a release cause well below that valuation... end result is fee of £200k and £16k a week.
So net cost to new Club is still £2.6mil ish.
Players and agents get rich. Struggling lower tier Clubs continue to struggle. All a bit sick - but we don't live in North Korea. C'est la vie.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Very disappointed and will be even more disappointed if Koroma goes. I dont begrudge any player bettering himself but this coming season looks like we will be happy to just be consolidating in the bottom half of the league

I don't think you understand release clauses and why we would have been more then happy with him signing his previous contract with such a clause.

Did nothing the second half of the season. He will not make it in the championship. We must have known about the release clause, why didn’t we go for macallum.

Looks like our ambitions have limits. Looking forward to starting next season with Alabi and Harold up front. A return to the NL beckons.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Having McCallum would have softened the blow. Perhaps it was just bad timing between McCallum going elsewhere and Bonne leaving.Give it to Jabo wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 1:10 pmQuite so. I think McCallum - he would have preferred us, I believe.
Re: Bonne to Charlton
Absolutely this........ I was shocked he went to Solihull and not us (assuming we went for him)
We needed a striker before Bonne went, so now we need two
Also agree Bonne was dire since Christmas. I'm not sure he's good enough for Championship.
