We have always sold our best players for less than what they are worth over the years,
this is no different.
The fact is we don’t have the fan base to compete with the likes of Charlton etc.
Go back to the 1970s and see the problems Brian Winston had in trying to get more than 5000 home fans to turn up. And that was in the Championship.
You don't expand your fan base and attract new fans by selling off your best players and failing to bring in quality additions to the squad it shows a total lack of ambition and it sticks two fingers up to the fans .
None of what you say has transpired yet.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
A few points, As far as I recall we paid about £100,000 for Bonne when we signed him, and as it seems he had a £200,000 release clause there is little more we could do to stop him.
As for finding a replacement , he despite all his endeavors was not the greatest finishers. Take way his penalty conversions and his strike ratio per chances was not that great. He wasn’t one to score from outside the box and wasn’t great at holding up the ball, or creating a chance out of nothing. I will be much more upset if Josh Koroma goes because he has all the attributes Bonne doesn’t.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Controversial but I agree. I believe he will struggle at that level. But good luck to the lad and thanks for the goals over two very good seasons.
Re: Bonne to Charlton
Can't see how the club can be described as winning with that kind of fee.... obviously we make a profit on him, but I think we've undersold themselves given the type of clubs linked to him. Even when we were in League One I do not think clubs of that size were linked with our players.
Looking back at other similar transfers of top NL goalscorers, Millwall paid £250k for Lee Gregory, even though Halifax were part-time and would had a harder time fending off clubs, and that was 2014 as well.
I totally understand that a release clause would have been insisted on as part of extending the deal, but Bonne and his representatives must have been laughing inside when it was set at £200k, a bit like that scene in Austin Powers where Slade asks for a million dollars. Can only hope the final deal is much more than this, or we get some players as well in return.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
If bonnes agent insisted on a £200,000 release clause then we were pretty much left with little choice, however that figure is merely the amount that the player could decide to leave and if several clubs were bidding for him it would not necessarily be the final fee.

If he hadnt signed a new contract last season, I presume we could have lost him for nothing this summer?

Re: Bonne to Charlton
If this reported clause is true, when will we as a club stop selling our best players for peanuts. I thought with two seasoned and top business people involved those days were gone, maybe I was being naive in that assertion.
Again if it’s true, it’s time they wised up and stop our club being sold short and cheaply.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
As far as the release clause goes, what if his agents said "Sorry, if there's no £200k release clause then we're off for nothing this summer"? Better to guarantee we kept him for this season and got out of the division (on that note the contract may have had a non promotion release clause of less than £200k).eagwgw wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 11:21 am Can't see how the club can be described as winning with that kind of fee.... obviously we make a profit on him, but I think we've undersold themselves given the type of clubs linked to him. Re: Bonne to Charlton
But the key thing is that we cannot reject a £200k bid. So other teams would just match that offer, not exceed it when they have no need to.Redcard wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 11:27 am If bonnes agent insisted on a £200,000 release clause then we were pretty much left with little choice, however that figure is merely the amount that the player could decide to leave and if several clubs were bidding for him it would not necessarily be the final fee.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Looks all a bit bull sh*tty and agent generated rumours to me. I am sure both players have been scouted by the clubs and on their radars, there is no doubt that both are quality players at conference and league 2 level, bit of a gamble for Championship level surely?? I wouldn't think they would get much if any first team football, not on a regular basis.
Obviously would like them to stay and see if they can push us on in League 2. However if the cash offered is right and they want to leave then fair enough off you go and good luck, let them go. Neither are irreplaceable.

Possible, but I don't think it's that binary (neither do you, I am guessing).Smendrick Feaselberg wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 11:40 am

These things are always up for negotiation, and it's pretty demonstrable that £200k for one of the best NL strikers under the age of 24 is a steal.
Or it could have been inserted that the clause is changed or revoked in the event of promotion.
I do think the situation was a bit different at that time as well. Bonne took a long time to sign an extension, but my gut feeling is that he did so because the correct opportunity did not materialise for him over the summer as opposed to negotiations being very complicated. We couldn't exactly play the Adams-style hardball game with him because of his importance to the side.

Not sure what player you where watching goal ratio 1 in every 2 games quite a few assists not bad at defending corners etc and runs all game don’t know what else you expect from a lower league playerRedcard wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 11:15 am A few points, As far as I recall we paid about £100,000 for Bonne when we signed him, and as it seems he had a £200,000 release clause there is little more we could do to stop him.

If he leaves he can hold us head up high he’s done more than a decent job for Orient while he’s been here

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Anyone saying the reported (which is also an important word) 200K is too low needs to remember that if we hadn't agreed such a clause, then Bonne would have been free to go this summer, subject to a tribunal fee which would have likely been less. In this case, there would have been little the club could have done.

I agree, good player and he’s certainly one of the first names down on the team sheet.Lucky7 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 11:52 amNot sure what player you where watching goal ratio 1 in every 2 games quite a few assists not bad at defending corners etc and runs all game don’t know what else you expect from a lower league playerRedcard wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 11:15 am A few points, As far as I recall we paid about £100,000 for Bonne when we signed him, and as it seems he had a £200,000 release clause there is little more we could do to stop him.

Do you honesty think just because someone has got a few bob they are going to blow it all to keep a few thousand Herbert’s happy who pay £300 per year?
Unbelievable.

I don't think he's Championship quality, but fair play to him and I genuinely hope he proves me wrong.

According to the LOFC article we signed him for nothing upon expiration of his contract. So looks like the sell on was in lieu of us paying a fee.

Re: Bonne to Charlton
Wish Bonne the best of luck. We were never going to keep all of our best players this summer and they have done us proud this season so will go with our total respect.
The message he released re Justin seemed to hint that he was off to pastures new. I hope he does brilliantly for them.
How we replace them is key, but 100k gets us a brilliant striker at this level if we invest wisely, and still leaves us with cash to spare from this deal.

Yep. It won't just be Bonne that has a release clause in his contract either.Buddy Manucci wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2019 12:16 pm Wish Bonne the best of luck. We were never going to keep all of our best players this summer and they have done us proud this season so will go with our total respect.
