Ibrox Disaster 2nd January, 1971

Post by Oiram »

Please all spare a thought today for the 66 victims killed and over 200 injured at the Ibrox Stadium Glasgow on the 2nd January, 1971, youngest was only 9 years old. God rest their souls and thoughts with their families.

Thanks, sad thing about that disaster is there were numerous ‘warning signs’ going back to just after the turn of the century with many fatalities and numerous injuries from similar events but far lesser scale. When one thinks of the thousands crammed into grounds then, it is a wonder that there were not many more. Awful , going to a match and tragedy occurring through negligence. Ruined the lives of many.

There were other incidents and deaths on this stairwell in previous years. I think there were deaths in 1968.

There was a documentary on BBC Scotland about it last week. You might want to view it on catch up. There was also a good piece in The National by a guy who was at the 68 and 71 incidents.

One thing that comes out of it is the appalling attitude of the Rangers (In Liquidation) Board who tried to blame the fans instead of taking responsibility.

They were sued for compensation in the Sherriff Court and had to pay out to the injured and families of the bereaved. The Sherriff was vilified by the Rangers (In Liquidation) Klansmen.

It was a terrible tragedy. Wasn't it caused by a goal being scored at the end of the match and the fans who were already leaving turned back to see what had happened?

No. That is a myth and the basis for an attempt to blame the fans. You miss the point I made about there having been other fatal incidents on this stairwell before 71. The Board failed the fans.

At least lessons were learnt and nobody ever tried to blame football fans ever again for things that were not true following a tragedy.

They don't like to talk about it because of the shame and negligence toward their fans. It's a bit like Celtic hate to talk about the peedo scandal.

Don't get me wrong Rangers had their peedo scandal too but as they are in liquidation they have a more relaxed attitude to being sued than Sellik.

Rangers can't they are in liquidation. Celtic are dealing with it by hiring a PR firm to get the message out that Celtic Boys Club was nothing to do with Celtic. Despite the similarity of the names and the identical kits.

I played against CBC a few times. One time at our home ground there was a gale blowing which they played with in the 1st half. At half time we were down 3-0.

At half time our manager offered his opposite number a bet for a tenner that we would beat them. He refused to take it which was lucky as we lost 4-0.

No. Only in the article.

The masonic controlled BBC can't allow it on screen because it connects the different disasters and demonstrates football club owners don't give a monkeys about the fans.

As a teen I used to rock up on the North Bank at Upton Park sometimes, and recall the chilling “Remember Ibrox” signs by the narrow, steep stairs at the back and sides of the (usually) packed terrace. It was lip service by the WHU owners back then: you’d often be swept off your feet by the crowd surge, but they never made safety changes until forced after Hillsborough.
