Ratings Thread (Unofficial)

Post by jamespevans »

A game we could have but didn't deserve to draw. Walsall were better organised than us, had a midfield and in Adebayo had a striker that made our defence look stupid.

Vigouroux - 8 - kept us in it at times and saved a penalty (a yard off his line, mind)
Brophy - 6 - didn't get much protection but did his best
Widdowson - 6 - gave the penalty away and I'm not convinced he's a CB
Coulson - 7 - our best defender and had to cover for Akinola a few too many times
Akinola - 5 - looked nervous and struggled, was probably responsible for the penalty and at fault for their second
McAnuff - 7 - some great runs but struggled to compete against a superior midfield
Cisse - 6 - struggled to protect our defence and gave the ball away too often when he ventured forward
Dayton - 5 - desperately average
Wright - 6 - ran around a lot
Wilkinson - 6.5 - not on his game and made a few wrong decisions around the area. needs to learn to use his right foot
Johnson - 7 - scored again but had few chances after that even though he always looked dangerous

Clay - 6 - didn't influence the game when he came on
J M-D - 6.5 - as usual okay with set pieces and not much else
Turley - 7 - brought on as a striker and won every header he contested.

He, Coulson and (I think) Widdowson went to close McDonald down, leaving Adebayo free on our right.

Your obsession with Sam is a bit weird mate.

The lump of a centre forward scored the goal.Akinola was trying to block his man from shooting.

Could and should have got something out of this game after being gifted an early lead. I thought Walsall were iffy at the back, unfortunately so were we and toothless in midfield once again we created very little. No real forward momentum content to pass backwards and forwards far too often.

Vigouroux - 8 - kept us in it,Quality keeper.
Brophy - 6 - didn't get forward much did OK defensively.
Widdowson - 5 - Looks uncomfortable at CB.
Coulson - 7 - A real soldier at the back, put his body on the line.
Akinola - 6 - decent full debut.
McAnuff - 9 - Tried to drive us forward and looked by far our best player tonight.
Cisse - 6 - Seems to have slightly lost his mojo looked knackered second half.
Dayton - 4 - Added nothing tonight waste of a shirt. Stood still as his man ran off him for their first goal.
Wright - 4 - See Dayton comments.
Wilkinson - 7 - Worked very hard but has too as no one else is likely to create much for him.
Johnson - 7 - Another goal, worked very hard but too often isolated on his own.

Clay - 5 - Never got going.
J M-D - 5 - Talented player but didnt influence the game after coming on.
Turley - 6 - Needs to get fit and start always a threat in the air.

Look at the video, Akinola, Coulson and Wright (not Widdowson) are closing down one player

Wasnt Akinolas fault the ball fell nicely for their striker and he put it away well.

The 15 - great little player - was Akinolas man.

Didn’t see first half but the kid had a decent second, no complaints from me.

I don't want to have a downer on the kid on his debut but he was also marking Adebayo at the back post when the cross came in

Not much actually came down our right in this game, but when it did, it was the usual situation where there just isn't enough cover for the right back. Contrast with the left side, where there was plenty of cover when the ball came down that side.

There is an argument that Brophy should be playing as a winger, but he is turning into a cracking left back.

Coulson, Widdowson and Cisse together cannot play the ball out from the back. Vigouroux may as well just keeping booting the ball to Wilkinson

Yup, Akinola was nearest to the guy and should have been closing him down. He's young & inexperienced and was played out of position but he was still at fault. He'll learn (hopefully).

Still not having it was Akinolas "fault" the ball was eight yards from our goal and he came across to block a potential strike on goal, the block by Coulson? fell for their player and Akinola was quickly across to try and make a block, thought he did all the right things.

If we constantly have weakness on our right side of defence
It is obvious that there needs to be a stonger right midfield presence
to help alleviate the problem further back .

Playing 4 3 3 isnt going to help with this with league 2 players .

Playing 4 5 1 & pushing wing backs & midfielders forward may .

But the tried & tested for league2 quality
will always be 4.4 2

I think we tried wing backs last season and failed miserably.

Agreed.

The reason Akinola was picking up the lump was because he peeled off Coulson who let him go. Watch the build up again, you see him do it.

Akinola was not to blame.

Is that from the bit where Akinola let there man put a ball to the other side
of the box where it came back from before there man put in the back of the net ?

Had that been our Squad number 2 you & others would be berating him for months.

If Dayton is gonna start then for me it has to be out wide and NOT in midfield where he offers nothing and is far too lightweight.
Josh Wright wasn’t much better unfortunately and I’m not sure either are good enough for L2.
I thought Akinola did ok for a debut but hopefully will play as CB which I think is what he’s been signed for.
Looking at last night’s game and Barrow on Saturday, I lost count of the number of times Vigouroux cleared the ball long towards Wilkinson and he either missed it or the defender won it, so we lost possession anyway. This happened time after time, so frustrating

For all the chat, Dayton is past his best. Shame but injuries finally taking their toll, his edge has gone.

Wright has rarely reached his best. With Wright and Dayton we were playing with 9 men.

As for Vigouroux kicking long. Who do we really have capable of consistently building from the back. Our passing accuracy stats are appalling. May just as well hoof it up. At least we lose possession up the field.

Maybe we should try playing it out from the back rather than just hoofing it towards Wilkinson’s general direction hoping he may win the ball now and again. Agreed that with Dayton and Wright it was like we carried them both, zero creativity , really Poor.
Without Jobi god knows where we’d be, and I think we really missed Sotiriou last night.

We do try to play it out from the back, it’s just we’re not very good at it.

All I can say is no way would Ling have been afforded the same generosity had he been on the pitch for the second goal.
