Stolen books worth £2.5m found under floor of Romanian house

Post by Sid Bishop »

Just the tip of the iceberg of the many valuable relics of the past, stolen but never traced again.
Happens a lot in wartime looting, Nazi Germany and the Japanese stole so many valuable things throughout the second world war, especially gold which they melted down into gold bars and were never traced again.

Just part of this news item.........About 200 "irreplaceable" books worth more than £2.5m ($3.2m), which were stolen from a warehouse in London, have been found buried under the floor of a house in rural Romania, police say.
The works include first editions of Galileo and Isaac Newton.
They were taken by thieves in January 2017 who cut holes in the roof of a warehouse in Feltham then abseiled in, dodging sensors.
The men were identified as being part of a Romanian organised crime gang.
The gang is responsible for a series of high-value warehouse burglaries across the UK, London's Metropolitan police said in a statement.
Officers discovered the books underground during a search of a house in the region of Neamț, in north-eastern Romania, on Wednesday.

I read about that also. Amongst them was a book on ‘Fly Fishing‘ written by J. R. Hartley. It was rather old.

Lots of stolen stuff in the British museum.

These books were just some rich bloke's investment, stashed away in a warehouse, where no-one could access them. I'm glad that these nice Romanian people are now able to read them to their kids at bedtime.

Ooh well every country acts badly when it wants to
Yes many things taken by colonial powers, not just the British but as in the above case, taken from India but openly on show, unlike many things stolen that vanished and were never seen again ! For just one example, the famous legendary Amber Room, thought to be most valuable piece of art stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War. The ornate panels, embellished with amber and gold leaf, were gifted to the Russian Tsar Peter the Great in 1716 and are estimated to be worth €250m (£224m) Mystery has surrounded the whereabouts of the Amber Room since the end of the 2nd world war.
