Squirrels

I just caught one in a humane trap as fed up with them ruining it for the birds , now my mate saying I have to kill it as illegal to release outside my house. I could put it over my neighbours but the animal will come back as I always put a nice spread on for my feathered friends. I cannot kill it as it would take my finger off trying to strangle it. Any thoughts please?

You could release it at the next home game, we all had a good laugh that match when there was a squirrel on the turf alongside Brophy.

You can buy a chilli spray to spray on the bird food, birds don't mind it, squirrels hate it.

If its a red one let it go.

If its one of those mangey looking grey ones it's vermin and should be dispatched with a rake or shovel.

It's also an offence to keep a grey squirrel in captivity (Destructive Imported Animals Act 1932), not to mention cruel (Wild Mammals (Protection) Act
1996).

Do the right thing and take it somewhere where there is nobody around and you can release it.

I had to let it go under my neighbours broken fence as it was distressed as magpies and crows were hanging around. They are vicious creatures and eat birds eggs and damage trees. Anyway he had a lucky day. Couldn’t trap him for hours and couldn’t dispatch. I have never seen a red squirrel ever by the way.

I used to trap and eat them a while ago. You have to be up for the dispatch though. Get it into a hessian sack and take a hammer to it. Not for everyone.

Well don't release it in broad daylight, do it in the evening when it's getting dark . Who's going to give a stuff about you releasing a squirrel anyway, just let it go in the park. It will probably rocket out of the box so nobody will notice or care .

That's because the native red ones have been pushed out by the more aggressive immigrant greys.

Yes true, I used to go to Sun Trap at High Beech as a kid and they always said the reds were underdogs but I have never ever seen one.

Squirrels damage trees but rarely kill them. It does make the trees less valuable though, so it's forestry people who grow trees as a crop that make all the fuss.

The damage actually supports biodiversity, as fungi grow in the wounds, which providers food for other creatures. Squirrels also collect and bury nuts and seeds and so allow more trees to grow.

Leave the little feckers alone.
