Moss, Brown & Nouble

3 Jan signings. 2 on the bench and never looked like coming on. The other has completely vanished.
The only reason Coleman is in the team is because Clay is injured, and we have no other backup. I suspect we won’t see much more of him after this season too. By far the worst player on the pitch today.
Says all you need to know about the business done in Jan. who actually signed these players?
I’ve said this a few times now but the signing of Nouble has to go down as one of the most mental deals ever put to paper. What were they thinking?

Disagree. Nouble is just another option behind Smith, Ruel and Drinnan.
Same with Ray, he’s awfully but we needed someone to cover Ogie and Beckles after Happe and Mitchell got crocked.
The signings of Brown and Moss are the bonkers ones.

I’d forgotten about Lego head Ray. On paper I can understand signing him on loan. A defender with league experience to provide cover during an injury crisis. Makes sense. Shame he’s utterly awful. The real crime with him is that he was played ahead of Ogie. Baffling.
Moss and Brown, I can also understand to a certain extent. Young players. Could have potential. Chucking Brown into the starting XI when he looks like he’d get bullied in an U16s match is what went wrong there.
Nouble, I simply cannot get my head around. During a crisis where we couldn’t score for toffee. We sign a bloke who hasn’t scored a single goal FOR A CLUB BELOW US in the league.
Utter, utter madness.

Did KJ highlight 3 players in each of the positions that needed attention to Ling. Ling probably because of limit resources got 3rd choice in each case. This probably is why KJ suddenly gave up on the team and lost the respect of the players. Nouble was only signed on the last day as Smyth got injured. The same thing happened last year on the last day of the window. Hopefully RW will not stand any nonsense in getting in the players he wants. As he was a midfielder that will be the area he will concentrate on first.

Martin said they had been looking at Coleman for some time . Was that before Kenny joined the club because I bet he wasn't Kenny's choice . Who signed him ?. Was this down to our transfer committee .? In future any new signings must be down to our manager and his alone . The club have hired Wellens and so now must back his judgment .

Kenny didn’t give names, he’s told Ling he needed a right back, a CM, a centre half etc.
Ling then came back with a list of names and gets him the 5th or 6th one.

If that happens again next season we'll end up struggling again .The club needs to have a rethink during the Summer.

I've given up hope of actually seeing Reilly play . I don't even know if he's a good player or not . Maybe its time he should think about retiring.

Yes, Callum Reilly is probably the worst case of uselessness since we signed a guy many years
ago named Michael Marks. He also hardly played any game time while he was here, another
complete waste of time and money. There are probably a few more like these two which I've
forgotten.

Have heard a few times now that he's fit and ready to play, how can he be a worse option than what we have out there and on the bench is beyond me.
Nouble actually seems OK in terms of being an alternative big lump presence to Smith so not as crazy as some of the other January signings.
Moss - youth player with only NL experience, wrong option when we needed a senior pro to replace injured James
Brown - U23 player with basically 0 senior pro experience, wrong option when we were desperate for a presence in midfield
Coleman - as above but at least has played pro football albeit at bottom of NL. You could excuse one gamble if we didn't have 3 ineffective U23 CMs of our own already.
Ray - panic signing to cover CB injuries, temporary solution to a temporary problem
Khan - the only one who has looked up to speed and ready to play
Wellens has to be left alone to get the players he wants in summer, else I fear we may see history repeat itself. The board must be breathing a sigh of relief at the upturn in results but the work is far from done.
They need to learn the lessons from January and give Wellens full control of reshaping the squad as he requires. If that means he dumps one or both of the January CMs as well as some of the academy players then so be it.
Also time to review some of the transfer practices that seem to be penny wise but pound foolish e.g.
- leaving transfer business late to save 1-2 months' wages but miss out on first choice targets
- operating a paper thin squad hoping to get to January to top up the squad; meanwhile injuries and suspensions cause us to lose all momentum in the difficult winter period. In the end the KJ sacking negates any "savings" the DoF likes to tell us about
- padding the squad with Orient academy players to justify its existence and give the impression of a larger squad than is actually there. Too many this season have been thrown in the deep end and floundered, not doing their development nor the club any favours

I saw Micheal Marks debut. I think he only played 2 games for us. We paid Millwall a fee for him. Neil Kaufman wrote that he was "one of the unluckiest footballers of his generation" but I can't actually remember what the situation or problem was. There's clearly a problem with Reilly as we're not exactly overun with midfielders. He's not even making the bench.

Coleman is not as bad as some supporters think he is, he plays the unglamorous defensive midfielder role who really is not going to be noticed, as he not expected to run about much, but just sit in there and when I have seen him play he always looks for a forward pass. Jordan Brown may well make more of impact next season, just give him a chance.
Nouble is the big mystery and now with 5 other forwards he has little chance of ever starting.

Thing is the squad only has a certain number of spots for CMs and under contract for next season are
Clay
Coleman
Brown
I wouldn't back a pairing made of any of those to be worrying the top half of the table. Assuming Pratley and Reilly goes at end of season that gives two slots back but will we sign two quality pros to replace them or do it on the cheap?

Excellent post gshaw and I 100% agree . Along with Kenny I blame our transfer committee for flirting with our league status . The thing is has lessons been learned or will our transfer committee stick their beak in again and get us even more dud players . ? Martin Ling saying we won't get our first or second choice signings isn't good enough if we really want promotion.
