Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
In France they often restrict speed on their motorways when pollution exceeds set limits. However this is used much as our "variable speed" sections of motorway are used i.e. as and when needed. It seems a little draconian to enforce it permanently.

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
On my rare forays on the UK Motorway system, I believe it is fortunate if one can ever achieve 50 MPH!

I heard one person on the radio say apart from the pollution, the theory is there should be less motorway accidents so traffic should stay free flowing more of the time.

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
Absolute rubbish, just want to raise revenue. How can one test out a 180mph car now?

Nice theory but I doubt it would workRedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2019 6:59 pm I heard one person on the radio say apart from the pollution, the theory is there should be less motorway accidents so traffic should stay free flowing more of the time.
Incidents ie animals jay walkers objects falling on the road/motorway etc can’t be dictated and usually leave a nice long delay and I doubt many switch there engine off waiting

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
The most efficient speed on the cars I’ve had tends to be 55mph. If pollution was the reason that’s a more sensible limit. Though that’s only based on the cars I’ve driven, others may be different.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2019 6:59 pm I heard one person on the radio say apart from the pollution, the theory is there should be less motorway accidents so traffic should stay free flowing more of the time.

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
That being the case then motorway speed limits should be 55 mph unless the thinking is that setting it at 50 mph means most people will add a little when driving.

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
It’s statistically proven that the faster a car travels the safer it is. I’m not advocating 100mph, but certainly more than 70.

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
Do those statistics simply suggest motorway driving results in fewer accidents than other roads that have lower speeds. More to do with the type of road rather than the speed of the road.

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
Tfl in their speed, emission and health document, says that 55-60 mph is the most efficient and therefore the least polluting.
I am sure if you dig deeper, you will find the research.

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways
Yes all cars, it’s the most efficient speed a car can run at. It’s why all cars mpg are measured at 55mph

Re: 50 mph Limit on Motorways

Pretty much ruins your silly statement.
Need to be an engineer or scientist to properly understand why.
