The Rolling Stones v The Beatles

I was taking the children to school this morning and on the way we play a game of who is the group and what is the name of the song.
At that moment Jumping Jack Flash came on and after a hint my daughter correctly named the group. So she was asking questions and I naturally said that the Beatles were there main competitors and some say the stones were the best and some say the Beatles were the best.
Personally I’m a stones man, heavily influenced I guess from my fathers taste in music, so where do you stand? Who do you think is the best? Maybe a reason why.

My old Dad is a huge fan of both but I think the Beatles edge it for me

They were around at the same time, but are so different. Its a bit like when Blur and Oasis were compared...completely different music.
I like both but the Beatles easily win out for pure consistency of quality. The stones singles might be better in some cases but a lot of their albums are filled with 12 bar blues numbers, even later in their career. The Beatles broke barriers with recording techniques as well as redefining what pop music was about and the Stones didn't get close to anything the Beatles released from Rubber Soul onwards imo.
Live the Stones were obviously better and I loved them at Glasto a few years ago, but the Beatles are the greatest band of all time sooo...

At the time I was all over the Mersey beat, I had a Beatles jacket. Mod haircut etc. But nowadays I would rather listen to Wild Horses than She Loves You (yeah yeah yeah)..

McCartney can’t sing anymore his voice is gone. My claim dates back to the concert out the front of Buckingham palace and the olympics, he can’t sing anymore like he used to. He needs to retire gracefully imho.

Roffey's Left Foot will be the defining post on this thread, as he is the music guru on here, that's even if he posts here anymore.

They all need to retire gracefully

Most of The Rolling Stones music is just loud noise. Not for me thank you. Beatles were geniuses.

Beatles were on a different level as regards 60s and 70s groups. Geniuses, yes of course. Like the very best composers of Classical Music such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky etc, their music will live on for many years after they are gone.

No contest IMO. the Beatles were the greatest band ever. Paul Mac particularly is a genius....a much overused term these days, but so true in his case.
Its like saying whats the best, a Roller or a Corsa. Theres no comparison to be made here

The Who or The Kinks. Incredible that four great bands all came about at the same time. Arguably no better bands since.
I would say The Beatles just about edge out The Stones, but Gimme Shelter, Paint It Black and Sympathy for the Devil are better than anything The Beatles did and Baba O'Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again are better that anything the Stones or the Beatles ever did. Who's Next is in my opinion is one of the greatest LPs ever.

I also used to like the ''The Beach Boys, Hollies, The Searchers, Freddie and the Dreamers, Gerry & The Pacemakers' The list is endless.
There were so many great groups around in the 60s and then 70s era.
Not much to shout about in the last 15 years or so. Manufactured girl and boy bands singing songs with the same words repeated again and again with far too much overuse of auto tune with the solo singers. Its all rather like instant plastic disposable type performers now, here one minute, gone the next.

There's never been a decent band from Liverpool. Echo and the Bunnymen were alright but that's about it.

Autotune is used because many of them cant sing. Without it, they wouldnt last 5 minutes

So many great bands from London (or thereabouts). Stones, Kinks, Who, Pistols, Clash, Jam, Squeeze, Damned, T.Rex, etc. And the greatest of all, David Bowie (though admittedly not a band!)

The Stones, unquestionably. Twist and Shout and Let it Be, but the rest is mainly middle of the road stuff.

The Jam were from Woking.
As for this Beatles v Stones argument. I opt for the Beatles and I once met Sir George Martin.

That's why I wrote thereabouts. Though they came from Woking, their initial gigs were mostly in London and the early songs reflected that.

I know I come from Woking, and you say I'm a fraud
But my heart's in the city, where it belongs.
Clearly from Woking and City not specified. I win.

The Rolling Stones have always been the “Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World “
Still selling out the biggest venues in the world, seen them since the early sixties up to last year at Twickenham, still amazing .
The Beatles were very good but the Stones are the Greatest ever.
