I am glad it is not only me who has a fight with a Fray Bentos pie tin, they are quite nice though. I met a bloke who worked for Fray Bentos when they were based in Stratford and he said they only used the best meat. Now whether he was taking the p**s or not I do not know. Westlers products are dire but I don't mind Vesta Chow Mein now and again if it is cheap. Vesta curries are full of dried bits of soya meat, they taste okay but are not much of a meal.

I've got a very old Orient scarf that still smells of Westlers burgers.

They still do Vesta Beef curry, yummy Paella and Chow Mein. Although I only see them in Β£ shops, their okay for a tasty and easy to cook nutritional meal when out wild camping. I like to add to them by bulking them up with midges and peat when in the Scottish Highlands. NOM NOM NOM.

Remember my surprise that when I moved to aldgate, the local tesco reduced all the fray bentos pies to 75p. What a dream. Haven’t had one since mind.
The puddings were decent too

Jay Raynor probably does not eat Fray Bentos Pies, Westlers Burgers or Vesta meals so I have to do it. If he does he would not admit to it because of the shame. Anyway, I have got a better haircut than him, eat your heart out Jay.

I have never had a ''Westler Burger'' and after the comments on here will stay well away from them.
Vesta Curries, well a throwback to the 60s and 70s and really awful, thought they were smart at the time.........till I went to an Indian Restaurant and tasted the real thing, purchased a couple of packets in Lidl a few years ago just to experience the taste of the 60s and 70s again, Vesta Beef Curry
( laughable) Vesta Beef Risotto and for me, best of a bad bunch was the Vesta Chow Mein. As to Fray Bentos pies and can I add Princess tinned pies, again both mediocre, in fact for nostalgia's sake, I purchased a tin of both brands in the last 6 months ( both brands were steak and kidney pies at Β£1 tin ) and they WERE as I remembered, a case of ''spot the piece of meat'' !!

Wow sounds so tempting ! Four tasty burgers ( according to this write up ! ) for only Β£1.20 !!

Product Description 4 Burgers in Onion Gravy.
Westlers Burgers in onion gravy are a delicious teatime treat for all the family. Why not try Westlers burgers with creamy mash, served with a side of vegetables as a main meal. Alternatively, for a satisfying quick snack, serve in a burger bun, drizzled generously with onion gravy.
Mums choice, Mealtimes made easy!

The pies are still occasionally consumed in this household, usually by me if I can't be arsed to cook, with a tin of beans to accompany. Instant heartburn occurs without fail. Crap really but somehow still a comfort food.
Westlers burgers used to be served up at my football club as a meal for opposing sides. Christ they looked and smelt evil and none of the home team went near them. As we not infrequently got turned over on the field it was a good way to get our own back.
Vesta curries were dire, dire crap and the first attempt to deliver curry to the home market. In the days when it became an authentic curry if it had some reconstituted dried currants in it. Foul stuff but we didn't know any better in those days.
All three from back in the dark days that also gave us Hirondelle wine, another corker!

@BoniO Hirondelle wine, remember the name but never tried it myself, found this description of it after reading your post !!
I used to like drinking the Liebfraumilch of the 70s and 80s, seems out of fashion now. Also worked at the ''Gilbey'' IDV bottling plant where so many brands of wine and spirits were bottled in Harlow, Essex. This massive bottling plant and the nearby distribution centre at Riverway in Harlow was closed down in 1990 with many people losing their jobs, due to EU rules e.g Source of origin'' Great place to work at, such happy times there and we used to bottle amongst other products, Piat Dior'' which was a French wine in both Red and White versions. It was Not as great as the mass advertising made out !!

''Hirondelle was the toast of the budget wine elite during the 70s retailing at Β£1.79 a bottle in the year 1979. The makers of this Italian white table wine, which masqueraded under a French name, rather dubiously never named the grape variety from which it was made. Based on its sweet taste it was likely to be a Muscat, or a blend of.''
